it's a case david muir has followed from the very start.ictim now sitting down for an exclusive interview. ♪ >> reporter: do you feel like you're a survivor? >> yeah. i shouldn't be alive. i really shouldn't, after what happened. >> reporter: for the first time, peyton lightner is talking about that day five years ago, three 12 year olds at a slumber party, and the next morning, a walk into the woods to play hide-and-seek. do you remember leaving the park to go to the woods? >> they just wanted to go on a walk, and i didn't think much of it. it's just a walk. what bad stuff happens in walk shaw, wisconsin? >> reporter: peyton was stabbed 19 times and left for dead by her own friends who later blamed the fictional character slender man. >> when i was five feet away, i said now, go ballistic, go crazy. stab, stab, stab. >> the suspect lured the victim into the woods. all three of the girls are 12 years old. >> who ever heard of 12 year old girls planning for six months to kill one of their best friends. >> through the whole time, peyton was s

now she is speaking out for the first time since that attack revealing to our david muir what it wasarly lost her life. >> have you ever watched any of those interrogations? >> i watched a little bit. >> what was your reaction? >> it was a little shocking to me to see that they had this big, huge plan that they had been working on for months. >> less than a week after the attack i was asked to go to the hospital to interview payton. she was very, very quiet. we had to turn up the sound on the recording equipment really high just to get her voice. >> do you remember leaving the park to go to the woods? >> they just wanted to go on a walk and i didn't think much of it. it's just a walk. it's in waukesha. like what bad things happens in waukesha, wisconsin? >> after we go into the woods we say we're gonna play hide-and-seek. >> anissa said to lie on the ground and cover myself with sticks and stuff but it was a trick. >> it took a long time to get her to say morgan's name or that morgan had even stabbed her. >> i give it back to her and say, you do it. go ballistic. and she said, okay,

here's abc's david muir. >> reporter: this is 80-year-old u.s. army veteran edward k. pearson.aper ended with these words. "this veteran has no immediate family. all are welcome to attend." and on the day of his funeral, we witnessed something extraordinary. hundreds came to celebrate a man who they did not know but who they wanted to honor. at the sarasota national cemetery in florida, this group carrying in american flags. others laying flowers, reaching out to touch the veteran's urn. the honor guard folding the american flag. there was one man who perhaps said it best. >> it shows that americans still care. and we still have a special empathy for mankind. >> reporter: one by one, mourners stepped up to the podium. >> when i first heard about him on the news, that he had no family, well, that broke my heart. >> i couldn't think of a better way to spend a day than to come and honor this veteran. thank you. >> reporter: and then the veteran's neighbor who told all of the strangers who had gathered how proud ed would be. >> if ed were here today and saw this for him, he would c

here's abc's david muir. >> reporter: susan becklin was born in detroit, adopted by lloyd and berniceas an only child. never knowing she was adopted until susan got a message just last month from this woman named jackie. >> we were hysterical. neither one of us could speak to one another. i mean, we just held the phone, i think, for a while. >> reporter: jackie is susan's older sister. jackie had spent her life looking for her, because she was old enough at the time to remember she had a sibling. she took an ancestry dna test and found her. jackie waiting at the airport for the sister she finally found. two sisters together for the first time in 75 years. >> we're together. after 75 years. >> reporter: they have a lot of catching up to do. >> now we can play hop-scotch. now we can have tea parties. we can go shopping. we can do anything we want. >> we have a lot to get caught up on, don't we, girl? >> yes, we do. >> reporter: this weekend the cake and the extended family susan never knew she had. >> that is just beautiful. found each other. >> it really is. where would you even start
