david muir, we've seen the history with the president on these kinds of attacks. >> and in this case a powerful woman in front of the american people today. chairman schiff just moments ago in doubling down on this hinting of a strategy moving forward on possible witness intimidation saying once again president trump is going after this dedicated and respected public career servant in an effort not only to chill her but to show others who may come forward what could happen. he said we take this witness obstruction and inquiry very serious. you have to wonder, george, if the president himself has somewhat undermined the whole republican strategy which is to say the president has absolute power to remove an ambassador if that's what he chooses to do. over the course of the testimony this morning she talked at length about how her own security was at risk and said i felt this was extremely irregular but told me there were concerns from the white house. then she learns about the transcript of the phone call that she was included again about something going to happen to her, bad things co

david muir here. the second witness, david holmes, we heard a lot about him yesterday. >> we did, and he was the one who works at the embassy in kyiv, and he overheard that phone call between ambassador sondland and president trump. he said he could hear president trump through the phone. it was an unsecure line, and it was sondland's actual cell phone, and he said, he could hear the president asking him, are they going to move forward with the investigation or investigations? sondland said that meant looking closer at burisma, and he said, he loves your -- we won't use that word on television. he says he uses colorful language. >> the witnesses are at the table. both chairman schiff and devin nunes are at the table right now. we'll be hearing opening statements as we have from both the chairman and congressman nunes, and then the two witnesses followed by those rounds of lawyer q they're taking their seats now. let's go inte ro as we're waiting for the swearing in to begin, we also heard from vladimir

i'm joined by our entire team today including "world news" anchor david muir, and it's clear that democrats believe taylor is their star witness. >> no question about that, george. they have carefully chosen these two witnesses and in particular, bill taylor as you point out, the top u.s. diplomat of ukraine, a west point grad, a war veteran, and he has served, and as you know, he was selected by the trump administration for this role. he was recruited by mike pompeo, and he has already said he had a very clear understanding that that nearly $400 million in u.s. military aid would be withheld from ukraine unless ukraine and the new president there investigated the bidens and said so publicly. he was also the diplomat who testified that he texted another, ambassador sondland saying it would be crazy for that money to be withheld to help president campaign, and on today that's going to come up, are these channels of diplomacy. bill taylor talked at length about this, how there was a regular channel of diplomacy he was apart of, and this was this irregul irregular channel he witnessed as well,

. >> david muir, i'm struck by how democrats -- it's not only democrats who think he will be a star witness today, but here's what congressman mark meadows had to say overnight. the impeachment effort comes down to one guy, ambassador sondland. all the other testimony has a sondland core to it, and a ko sondland connection. >> reporter: there is no question. e-i was struck by how many times and going back through the testimony, vindman said, bolton cut the meeting short when sondland started to speak about the requirement that ukraine deliver specific investigations to secure that meeting with president trump. it was the republican witnesses as well, tim morrison formerly with the nsc. morrison, he said, that the ukrainians would have to have the prosecutor general make a statement with respect to the investigations as a condition of having the aid lifted. he was pressed again. what did you say to the senior adviser zelensky? the ukrainians would have to have the prosecutor general make that statement of investigation. >> ambassador sondland has taken his seat. let's enter the room. followi

we have a team here in the studio including david muir, and the world not only having this public hearing, but they're following the news from wednesday, the revelation that someone else had heard a phone call between president trump and ambassador sondland. that witness will appear behind closed doors. >> his name is david holmes, and all of this testimony has been hearsay, but david holmes is the state department staffer in the ukraine. he said he could hear president trump through that phone the day after the infamous phone call between president trump and the president of ukraine. this was a phone call between the president and ambassador sondland, of course, attached to the eu, but who was the president's point man it would appear if this testimony is to be believed all week. david holmes will talk about what has he heard, and in another sign of a willingness to break ranks. tomorrow, the omb staffer he is willing to testify under subpoena, george. this will be the first person from omb, the budget office, learning about the directive when it came in, and why they wanted to withhold
