were there, and it was crazy, because they said robert de niro's name and then jaci weaver and david o. russellbbed by the dga and golden globes. so i was kind of emotional, especially jacki. they said my name and my mother was flipping out. i guess i had no reaction at all. she starts laying into me, like what are you doing? they said your name. i was like what? and then i called robert de niro. because i was so excited that they said his name. i love him and we're friends, but i never -- i try not to get mushy with him, you know i mean? like sensitive. but i was so excited. i was like hey, bob. he was like yeah -- the thing about robert de niro is he loves talking about schedules. >> jimmy: really? >> like hey, bob, how you doing? good, 10:00, i'm going to go over here. 11:30 -- great, bob. great. so he's just got into town. >> jimmy: that's what my dad does. >> that's what it is. spend two hours talking about his schedule. and i love it. but maybe this morning we talk about something else. so i was like hey, he's like hey, how you doing? i was like hey, congratulations. huh? yeah, yeah, yeah

i sat down with director david o. russell recently to hear how the film hits close to home.> i thought you were doing it. >> reporter: about dark clouds giving way to silver linings. >> she is my friend with an f. >> capital f. >> for friend. >> this is a love story writer and director david o. russell had to make. >> five years i wanted to make the picture. i was given the book five years ago and i jumped on it. >> do you remember how the book came into your hands? >> sydney pollock of all these great films "the way we were." he had the book. and i said oh, wow, this would be fantastic. he said how can you get the tone right? because it's tricky. it's very disturbing material. it's uncomfortable material for people to see a family in crisis, to see someone out of control, someone struggling with moods. >> i thought you said you had it together, you were solid! >> i am solid. i was solid at the game. >> reporter: the truth is, david has lived this story. his own son, matthew, has suffered from mood disorders since an early age. >> nothing comes easily to him. that makes your

. >> jimmy: the director of the film, david o. russellere, and he seems like an odd guy and i've seen clips of some of the actors on some of his other films having like fights with him and all kinds of crazy stuff. did you have that with him? >> no. our biggest problem, we're the same person, so neither of us can pay attention for more than three seconds. so if it weren't for bradley, we would have never gotten anything done. >> jimmy: oh, really? >> david's thing was he would always be really close. we were doing a diner scene where he was laying down in a booth right next to me, like three inches away. and i'm talking and doing the scene and i hear him start to go, "oh, god. oh, i hate this. oh, it's so bad." i'm finally like do you want me to do something else? he's like yes, anything. >> jimmy: why does he have to be so close? does he think it's a muppets situation or something? >> i don't know. yeah. >> jimmy: he just likes to be in the action? >> i guess so, yeah. >> jimmy: wow that is very strange. >> but it works. >> jimmy: do oth
