do they like david perdue?t different answers from different republicans. republican voters here are very much aligned with donald trump. the energy in the republican bates is with donald trump, and so as a result, you have a majority of republican voters here who don't believe that the last election was fair and square. they're looking for somebody to blame. and many of them do blame brian kemp for that instead of donald trump or david perdue who were both on the ballot. so the energy is with that argument, and the race, and so we're going to have to see where those voters end up for republicans in power, elected republicans, they do not want to have this conversation. they don't want to pick between the sitting governor and president trump. that is a really difficult position for them to be in. but it's where they find themselves today. >> steve bannon has weighed in for what that's worth. he says that david perdue is or should be the last person who is challenging brian kemp for governor. he says there's no

now, of course, david perdue was one of the senators who lost. probably more blame with him. to a state legislator right before air time who told me that he and other members of the state legislature are getting phone calls from trump supporters saying if they don't come out endorse perdue, they can expect primary challenges in these newly redistribucting lines. a lot of them think maybe it's time to stand up and not do this. >> hmm. van, i guess some democrats might be relishing the idea of kind of a divisive republican gubernatorial primary in georgia but it seems to me they shouldn't because we need two functioning parties that are law-abiding and fact-based in this country. we need a healthy republican party. >> i -- i agree and -- and what saved constitutional democracy, the rule of law were two groups that don't agree on anything. one, you had a bunch of black women mostly who led the charge who -- who did unbelievable voter turnout. um, on the one hand. and then, you had conservative white men who were election officials -- mostly in the republican party -- who upheld

david perdue is now running for governor of that state. he's running for governor because president trump asked him to. he's his preferred candidate and it's easy to see why given the things he's saying. he's building this campaign for governor on the debunked claims of voter fraud in that state. shortly after launching his gubernatorial bid this week david perdue said he wouldn't have allowed biden's victory in georgia to be certified if he had been serving as governor at the time. he's also calling for a special legislative session to delve into all of trump's conspiracy theories of what happened in 2020. and now today david perdue filed a lawsuit pushing those baseless conspiracy theories. georgia public radio summed it up with this rather blunt headline. quote, david perdue files election lawsuit with recycled, already disproven claims of fraud. the lawsuit he filed today claimed fraudulent ballots were counted in fulton county, georgia, even though that is bull and has been thoroughly refuted by investigators, thoroughly investigated,

senate david perdue's camp hit right back saying that it was brian kemp's fault for that defeat in januaryms as effectively as he tried to fight david -- donald trump, then republicans would have won those matchups so it is already a bare knuckled fight in georgia. >> what's the temperature in georgia on a trump endorsement how does that sway things, if at all? >> reporter: the atlanta journal constitution polls have shown over and over again, trump's popularity remains sky high among georgia republicans. even as voters are split or souring on him in the general electorate, republican voters continue to hold him in high esteem for a republican primary that will attract a core electorate of republican voters in georgia, that is going to be key. it's hard to say there's a front runner in this race because david perdue has donald trump's endorsement. and because governor kemp is the incumbent and has the power and platform of being the governor of the state of georgia. >> if the trump endorsement sways things and perdue wins the primary, what do things look like once you get to the general? i

david perdue, one-term senator whose cousin was the first republican govern since the reconstructionf georgia, both with solid bases, both with lots of money, both with lots of name recognition. it's going to be all-out war is what brian kemp's camp has predicted for weeks now. >> yeah. a total war, as you write. for the republican party, i wonder what this means when you have these two sides that battled when it came to the big lie on full display. >> yeah. and on the one hand, you have a governor who refused to call a special session to overturn donald trump's election last november. on the other hand, you have a loyalist. one of the first u.s. senators to endorse donald trump who has called for more investigation into the false claims of election fraud and has backed up the former president's efforts to overturn the election. so it will be a battle between pro-trump factions. and something that worries republicans who want to focus on 2022 rather than relitigate 2020. >> i assume he would not be able to resist the two on this, trump. the two are already jabbing at each other. what

they said nothing about david perdue. i was entirely okay with attacking. the next several months, they spent attacking each other, stacey abrams will be trying to register more voters and assured them of their voting rights in georgia. the new york times reports, her candidacy ensures that voting rights will remain at the center of the political conversation in democratic circle and in georgia, where republicans enacted a sweeping law of voting restrictions this year. stacey abrams, campaigns also carries, if she is successful, she will become the first black governor of georgia. and the first black woman to serve as governor of any state. here is some of what's abrams told rachel maddow last week. >> my mission is service. and to serve people, you have to care about them. you have to care about all of them. i have spent my time doing what i can to serve georgia. whether that was expanding access to vaccine, paying off 60,000 georgia medical debts. getting thousands of pounds of food banks. helping families keep their incomes high. helping small businesses

he wouldn't have certified those results, which means presumably the reason trump's promoting david perdue for governor is if perdue gets the governor's job this time around, he really won't certify the election results in georgia if and when joe biden beats trump there again in 2024. so yeah. we're the leader of the free world, and we're hosting the summit for democracy, and we've got our own challenges on that front, both in terms of whether or not, you know, half the governing -- one of the two governing parties and its support irv media in this country actually supports democracies around the world against authoritarians that want to invade them, and whether or not the same governing party and media supports it, whether u.s. elections should be continued to be carried out over the centuries, right? whether or not u.s. elections, u.s. small d democracy should be a technocratic nonpartisan thing. today in the january 6th investigation, the investigation into the violent attack by trump supporters on the u.s. capitol in january to try and stop the election being certified. today former pr

david perdue obviously sees it that way.perdue lost the race because the election was rigged and stolen in the january runoff and here's perdue saying the opposite. >> you do want the endorsement throughout the election. with all of the things piling up, but what david perdue said about the election fraud and all of the claims and basically blamed the loss on stacey abrams and brian kemp, handing over the power to stacey abrams, none of that was true. the reality is, he has a tough competitive race in georgia. we will see if brian kemp stays and runs but former president trump remains at the center of the vortex of republican primaries. so everyone wants his endorsement. he's absolutely right what he said hough hewett today. it's a treasure everybody covets. >> he's endorsed more than 80 races, dozens more expected to come before the real crux of the gop primary season. he's playing strategically in races all over the country. >> we will see how it plays out, the impact it has on the general election as well and democrats, o

then, there is republican david perdue. who lost his senate seat in that hotly contested georgia run-off election the day before the attack on the capitol, and is now running for governor of georgia. he's got this whole new thing. you decide if you think it's grifty. because he's still pushing the big lie of bogus-election fraud. filing a lawsuit just today, more than a year after the election, a lawsuit to inspect absentee ballots from 2020. as i have been saying here, it's been reported everywhere, the ballots were counted three times. georgia officials have said over and over and over that there is no evidence of widespread fraud. joe biden won the state by about 12,000 votes. but that is not stopping david perdue from running on the outlandish claim that he would stopped the certification of a lawful election. like i said, the warning lights are blinking red. democracy is in peril, with republicans running on the idea that they would refuse to certify legitimate elections. there was a time when some republicans knew wha

so, that guy was former georgia senator, his name is david perdue.hrust georgia into the national political scene. per due's announcement comes days after stacey abrams said she would run again as the democratic nominee. put perdue's announcement throws the republican party process into chaos again with the twice impeached president endorsing that guy, saying kemp was a, quote, very weak governor. joining our conversation, greg, reporter for the atlantic journal constitution. what's amazing about perdue is he's not stupid. he, too, knows like kemp and raffensperger, there was no fraud in georgia. if you disagree with that assessment at any point, please jump in and correct me, but he's making this cynical bet, frankly, kemp and raffensperger were trump supporters too, and the only line they wouldn't cross was finding the fake votes that didn't exist for trump in the state. what is this primary going to be about? >> it's going to be brutal, and the former senator's argument right now is that brian kemp quote/unquote caved, and he caved to stacey abram

summing it up with this headline, david perdue files election lawsuit with recycled already-disproven claims of fraud, claiming fraudulent ballots were counted in fulton county georgia, even though it's bull and has been thoroughly refuted by investigators. but mr. perdue's suit also renews the conspiracy that centers around ruby freeman and her daughter. it argues that fulton county election workers pulled out suit cases of illegal ballots and counted multiple times and you can bet the threats and harassment will kick up again for ruby freeman and her daughter and her grandson and her mom, now that that conspiracy theory is back in the news. and maybe this is all a stunt in terms of david perdue trying to get elected as the next trumpy republican governor of georgia but it's also part of a really big multivariant systematic attack by republicans on the voting system in georgia. one of the things voters in georgia just got the ability to do is replace election boards in that state. the republican-controlled georgia state legislature shifted the power from board members to local county
