obama's jobs bill, which faces a key vote in the senate today, is the president's strategist, david plouffe. good morning, david. thanks for joining us this morning. i want to get to the jobs vote in a minute. but weigh in on the herman cain phenomenon. a couple of months ago, he said he's following a playbook of the obama campaign. he said -- david plouffe wrote a book. guess what we did? we read the book. let me tell you about herman cain. i don't have a problem taking a good idea and using it, even if it did come from obama. what do you make of herman cain? >> i'm not an expert in the republican primary process. to use a baseball term here, we're still in the second inning here. this is going to have a lot of twists and turns between now and early january. i think what you will see on the stage in new hampshire tonight, all of the candidates subscribing to the same economic policies that led to the great recession. they want to let wall street write their own rules. huge tax cuts for corporations. they want to not invest in things like education. and rebuilding the country. that's really

david plouffe there was really trying to channel some of bush in 2004. that you may not like the way things are going right now, but here's a leader who's prepared to lead, take these kinds of executive orders. compared to candidates like mitt romney who doesn't really know where he stands or a party that's out of the mainstream. out of the mainstream, a candidate who doesn't know what he is, that's exactly what republicans did to john kerry in 2004. >> mitt romney has been constant in the polls. but we've seen so many people as you say take the lead. five minutes here. it was herman cain, rick perry, michele bachmann. perry, your paper suggests that newt gingrich is actually in some corners being looked at again. >> he's the next guy, i guess, in line to try. you've seen all these republicans -- we went from michele bachmann to rick perry to herman cain who has looked in trouble today. i think the republicans are giving gingrich a second look. at the end of the day it looks like romney's been very stable throughout. his numbers are about 20% in iowa, 30

that was senior obama adviser david plouffe on "meet the press" yesterday, clearly signaling that the romney is the candidate that the obama campaign is most worried about. back in august, a politico piece previewed the obama strategy. its headline, "obama plan -- destroy romney." the story said, "barack obama's aides and advisers are planning to center the president's re-election campaign on a ferocious personal assault on mitt romney's character and business background. his aides are increasingly resigned to running -- the president's aides -- to running for re-election in a glum nation. so the candidate who ran on hope in 2008 has little choice four years later but to run a slashing, personal campaign aimed at disqualifying his likeliest opponent." well, are we seeing the rollout of the obama campaign strategy already? sam stein is the white house correspondent for "huffington post" and susan mill i gan is with "u.s. news & world report." susan, that looked like the talking points to me of the obama campaign voiced by its top kick. >> absolutely. well, look, that's their strongest
