we're going to broaden our conversation with a pair of political gurus, david plouffe, who advised president obama and now is contributor to abc news. welcome david. matthew dowd, top strategist on the george w. bush campaign and our chief business correspondent rebecca jarvis joins us from new york. i want to go back to you first, jon, we heard a congressman say in your piece, that heads ought to roll. >> yes, what i'm hearing from the officials, there will be changes to the president's team coming out of this. they're not looking to fire anyone now. the president believes that would be counterproductive. you can imagine, martha, if there were a change at the top, if kathleen sebelius was fired, he would be left with a vacancy at top of hhs and a long drawn-out confirmation battle. >> matthew dowd, let's turn to you, it sounds for policy reasons and efficiency reasons, perhaps, they shouldn't have any heads rolling right now, but the optics of this are so bad. >> to rebuild trust is to bring new people in. to me this presidency and actually the last presidency that i was involved in with th

david plouffe said if there's another bad debate we could lose this election. there was a profanity in that sentence which i left out here. >> the first lady weighed in, so did former president bill clinton who they call big dog. what roll did they play in getting the president back on track? >> bill clinton at that point after having one of the great things about the book is the way we trace the relationship with bill clinton and barack obama during the whole term, particularly the election year. by the time theta to the second debate, bill clinton was on barack obama's side. it hadn't been like that. he was trying to give obama advice, trying to tell him he didn't want to try to do to much at hofstra, didn't want to make up all the ground he lost. the president's debate team more or less rejected bill clinton's advice. they said, look, barack obama has to come out swinging in the second debate, he has to look like he's fighting for the job. the first lady was very upset about the way the debate prep had been handled during the first debate. the president had

you have the white house chief of staff, david plouffe, david axelrod. they did that poll. back and there wasn't much of an impact. they didn't go forward. make no mistake. they were looking for a solution. if it looked like hillary clinton would help they could have gone to the next step to consider pros and cons. >> that's the behind-the-scenes stuff i find interesting. let's talk about the vp vetting process of governor romney. christie was considered. became problematic. there is almost a coronation after his win yesterday that he'll be the republican nominee. i think he has more problems than people anticipate. >> they looked at him. governor romney wanted him on the short list. crossed him off when it seemed chris christie wasn't responding to the questions of the vetters. romney said it will be a problem. we don't want to do this. stuart stevens said, we are in a street brawl here. the obama campaign is pummelling us with negative ads. we need the best street fighter. we have to reconsider chris christie. they spent 11 days in a krcrash vet. almost like on sarah pali
