joining us now, someone who was on the inside of the obama white house legislative battles, david plouffeand white house senior adviser to president barack obama. he is a msnbc political analyst. and david, from your old spot in the white house, watching what happened in the senate today, what happens next, and do you fear -- because you have a good feel for voters' reaction to this stuff. do you fear democratic voters' impatience with this process that is going on in the senate, which is clearly some sort of performance art for joe manchin and senator sinema to prove to them that the republicans really are what they say they are? >> well, maybe, lawrence. you know the senate very well, so this is just what it is. but now sinema and manchin have to permission, which is so important. do people with permission? do they have offerings to do something a little differently than what we were saying? with republican opposition we should get rid of the filibuster entirely. the republican party is not the opposition party anymore it's a cult that's bent on -- democracy so they can retain power. th

still with us, david plouffe and tim miller. so, tim, what do you think of this straw poll?y right now? >> look, i think two things are happening at the same timement one, you have your henry olson types doing their wish casting. so desantis is a safe place for them to write down with his analytic hat on. but here's the thing. you know, if trump were not to run, desantis is clearly the successor in waiting. i find it hard to believe that he'd actually challenge trump. you know, you say he has a challenger in the party. he hasn't actually challenged trump on anything. he's only tried to suck up to him and imitate him as much as possible. if i were the democrats, i would not look at him likely at all. he's done a nice job in florida politically speaking of balancing the old bush republican guard with the new maga guard and gaining a lot of excitement about that. you saw him at the florida i guess it was state fair where they had 70,000 people at a concert. he went out there to speak and rail against masks and rail against the biden administration. he had a very, very warm welc
