let's turn now to david plouffe. rmer campaign manager for president obama who knows about these situations and knows about these coalitions, david. i mean, i think we just have to face facts. from a strategic perspective the democratic party is a messier thing than the republican party, donald trump is getting convicted and all those guys went and dressed like him and stood outside the court. that's not what the democratic party is right now. it's got people with differences. >> we're not a cult. i think we're having a healthy discussion. it does need to conclude at some point, but i do think -- your example in franks is important. i believe still today in the battleground states which is all that matters in, the windshield we need to look out, there are enough voters part of that anti-trump coalition. some will be pro-biden. some are pro-democrat. some are going to be aligned with us simply because they don't want to see a return of donald trump. now, i think we have to be realistic about where the race is. this tim

i keep thinking about the campaign that david plouffe led. we were all at grant park in 2008 and even both parties there was a sense of decency and possibility and here we have just no choice but to sort of go with what we have been given, which obviously people in both parties and people across america are very dissatisfied with. so i don't know. i wish people would just be honest and be vocal and speak up and not just sort of give into the learned hopelessness and give into the just sense of going along and sort of lemming- like mentality that certainly seems to have driven the republican party and the democratic party to this point. >> david, do you read anything into donald trump being completely silent about joe biden stepping down? does that suggest to you republicans would like this to go one way or the other? >> my sense is they would like this match-up. that's always a tell. you should pay attention to what your opponents think. i don't think the trump campaign has gotten all the mileage they could have out of this. it does speak to

i want to bring in david plouffe, former obama campaign manager and white house senior adviser. you know this man, what he's capable of. you know his upupsides, his downsides. it's hard to say what do you expect because we expected something different from what we got in the debate, but what do you think would be helpful if he could accomplish tonight? >> well, joe biden knows the stakes better than anyone, so i would say a poor performance is going to accelerate democratic officials and voices calling for him not to run. i think an average performance probably is status quo. if he were somehow to deliver the kind of performance that looks like he could come back, and that's where i'm focused. you talked about the stakes. they're enormous. so this race has to be won. and right now, we're losing. and so we need a candidate who can dig out of that hole. you know, win wisconsin, win pennsylvania, win michigan. when you have 80% of the country saying that they're worried about your fitness and your approval rating is at 32%, you have a long way to go. doesn't mean it can't be done,

john allen, david plouffe, stuart stevens, people are talking about a debate that didn't work out but those are big numbers. >> i think the only thing that stands between donald trump presidents and perhaps the end of democracy is joe biden. i think you will see grassroots donors continue to give. we are only 90 days away from people beginning to vote in battleground states. you are running out of time. every day, every week to make up the ground we need to make up. the most important thing is joe biden's performances. getting better and not giving voters who don't really want to vote for donald trump but worried about fitness, that will give them structure. advertising is important. round game is important. you have to be pouring it on right now. you want to be fully funded in october as ballots are going on in people making final decisions. you got to be on it right now. seeking fundraising keep up is a great sign because it's an important part of the matrix to make up the ground to make up in battleground states. >> you have to have the dollars to show the voters of the policy win
