with david roderick. but first an interview with sharing abaum, collection of oral interviews with "american history tv." gemma birnbaum is with us from the national world war ii museum in new orleans. she joins us on c-span3's american history tv via skype. 75th commemorate the anniversary of the d-day invasion and its significance, explain the oral history project, how it came about and why you are doing it. gemma: i think oral histories has always been at the heart of the national world war ii museum ever since we started the d-day museum way back in 2000. originally a lot of this started because of stephen ambrose, our founder. he was a professor of history at the university of new orleans. he was a professor of history. he was collecting these as part of his work as a biographer. in the 1980's he may have begun seeking out all these personal accounts. many of them are on audiotape. we have been keeping a lot of those records in cooperation with the university of new orleans. and that was really the b

david: david roderick. tommy: mr. roderick, can you tell me about where you are born, where you grew up. tommy: i was born -- david: i was born in decatur illinois on november 18, 1923. ,decatur is located in the central part of the state. i am really a midwestern young man. and i had five brothers, and my mother and father died when i was quite young. and my father matter of fact was only 40 and my mother was 38. and nothing that was unnatural about it except they would probably be living today with the resources that we have in medicine. my father died even before penicillin. pneumonia. my oldest brother was married and had a child. and then i had three younger brothers myself, and i was 16. and i decided that i better move out and have one less mouth to feed. and so i joined the army at 16 -- that was before the war, and was immediately sent to alabama. and at that time, why the training did their own and later during the war of course they changed, they had folks designed to refill the replacements. the 22nd regim
