let's discuss with david rosenberg frrose rosenbe rosenberg.of the economic data has come in soft. inflation last week. retail sales. new york manufacturing yesterday. can you square that with this record high stock market? >> well, you know, the record high stock market has its own particular dichotomy. in the past three months, what's kept the glue together has been basically six high-priced and high-market cap growth companies. outside of that, the rest of the market has moved sideways. you know, there's a bit of a bifurcation between the flashy growth companies and the rest of the market which has been flattish. >> what sort of signals are you getting from data? do you expect the rebound that everybody is looking for in q2? industrial production later today. what will you be watching to confirm it's there? >> right. i think the bar has been set pretty low. if we're talking about an improvement in the second quarter, we have to do better than 0.7% from what we saw in the first quarter. if the consensus say is 3%, 4%, which is where i see it,

let's talk about central bank policy a little more with david rosenberg, chief economist and strategist and joins us from toronto. david, great to see you, first of all, happy memorial day. i wonder what do you think about the similarities between the e.c.b. situation and the fed situation because a lot of market participants would like to see the e.c.b. get a little more hawkish and seems inflation isn't giving them any reason to do so. is the fed in the same boat? >> i don't think the fed is in the same boat because we don't have a situation in the u.s. where we have the central bank actions holding yields negative out to the mid part of the curve. don't forget the fed has already raised rates three times and is pledged to do more. the u.s. economy is in a more advanced stage in its cycle than europe is and the monetary tightening cycle is in a more advanced stage as well. so i think the comparisons really start and stop there. i think that you're almost in a situation where europe is where the u.s. was three or four years ago when we had the taper tantrum. there's no tantrum in europ

for more we're joined by david rosenberg chief strategist and economist.k to "squawk on the street" and mike santoli, senior markets commentator. does snap do anything, mike, to ruin the narrative about technology in the amazing outperformance of the nasdaq, 18% since the election? >> i think it disturbs the big five of the nasdaq. really what's powering it ahead. i think coming into this week earnings did pretty much all they could do to reassure investors that basically the profit rebound is intact. so anything you got this week was more likely to detract from that view. so disney a little bit ragged and all the rest. i don't think it's a big mover right there, but along with macy's where the consumer side had bounced really hard, a lot of the stocks had a good few days. now you have another reminder that things are tough there. so not saying snap is helping things today, but i don't think that's the big swing. >> david, we're looking at all s&p groups now lower today. this is a broad based sell-off. haven't seen that in a while. yesterday, we were tryin
