straight to the overall market with david rosenberg from rosenberg research you've been negative for a long time on the market, on the economy. is this how you expected it to play out >> well, broadly speaking, sara, the answer, you know, would be yes. and, you know, we have the fed -- really what's happened in the past 24 hours now that we have the bank of england behind us is the fed has been relentless in its hawkish rhetoric and to an inverted yield curve, surging dollar, contraction in the monetary base and the onset of recession and so that just has precipitated this ongoing risk off trade and it's probably not going to end "nightline" the fed embarks on the next cycle which is probably at least a year away >> but here's what's not playing out exactly as you forecast. the economy is not weakening that much. i know you think there's a recession and a lot are jumping on that bandwagon but the data today, did you see jobless claims, well below consensus, now a low -- it gives fuel to the bears who say the fed has the green light to go more aggressively >> yeah, you know, well firs

longtime bear david rosenberg runs rosenberg research, known as serving as merrill lynch's top economist. good to speak with you >> thanks, melissa great to be on >> i will pose the same question to you you expect 75. that's a different question from what do you think the fed should do at this point what do you think the fed should do >> i would pause and assess. i know we're talking about inflation but the economy is flat on its back and it's a lagging indicator. this fed is bent on focusing on contemporaneous or lagging indicators and 75 basis points is baked in the cake powell basically put us on watch for that move after jackson hole irrespective of the cpi number yesterday. >> what do you think will be the consequences of the 75 basis point hike you think will happen next week? if the economy is already flat on its back and you think the fed should do nothing next week, what happens >> i'm saying i would be pausing on rates don't forget they're doubling up on quantitative tightening and that will be an ongoing source of policy restraint whether they pause on interest rates or not th

you had david rosenberg on earlier. i think we're headed for a recession if not already in one.ugh for car sales and they do have expensive cars so that's going to be a little tougher there. the stock is still expensive if we're headed to recession, we'll probably test the june lows and i think we will some of these big cap names i'm afraid will take it on the chin once again you'll get a better opportunity to buy it six to nine months from now. >> share your perspective here on roku, which was a pandemic darling, really. >> yeah, the one thing with -- again, we're worried about a recession here one of the things that people seem to be complaining about and rightfully so, i know we do it, we're loaded to the gills with all these streaming services do we really need another one, especially where we add hardware so that's going to be tough for roku to pick up the market share or regain their market share going forward. another thing, though, is also advertising during recessions. that tends to go down. like it is with tesla, another stock like tyler said down 85% i think you'll be

. >> will pick from david rosenberg. he is iconic. in his own shop in toronto, but what is so is that the media focuses on emotional things like used cars, and it is all many pieces. you have to parse that out, and it may parse storage a disinflationary tenancy, but does it get you from eight or nine donda seven? that is on acceptable, no question. down to five, or where after that. it is a huge debate. >> you press the question. what do we do have we settle at five? what does that leave the fed? i caught up with darrell yesterday, and we have been talking about inflation and hawkish in us. we need to discuss that more, and there is persistence. rates up there that will be held from last week did it does a lot of damage. >> it could. the trend from europe on job day, dear p and dynamic is factors worse. >> the difference between the fed and the ecb, both central banks, it is set that hike this is a debate as to whether the fed will drive the economy into a recession. a europe, known as questioning that. that's how deep it will be. it'
