released that on day christie convened a meeting of his top advisers and one of the attendees was david samsonaccording to the memo outlining the christie interviewed, when samson arrived, the governor took him aside and asked if he knew anything about the lane realignment allegations. samson responded he did not. samson has since resigned and christie has repeatedly vouched for his integrity. joining us now is paul butler, a current professor of law at georgetown university. mr. butler, thanks for taking some time tonight with us. so i want to start with this whole question of transcripts for the interviews that christie's internal investigative team conducted. people are saying, okay, he put the report out. let's see the transcripts. lo and behold, there's no transcripts. and from the master law firm there's a statement that, quote, it's customary to summarize interviews in memoranda rather than transcribe or tape them. is that accurate? >> yes, that's the standard course. that's how the fbi does it. you know, lawyers are control freaks. we like to control the flow of information. this way t

david wildstein, bridget kelly, david samson and other players currently embroiled in the george washington bridge and hoboke matters. it also tells us critically important thing about the investigation. it's pretty clear prosecutors are escalating their investigation. in other words, they're building a case and they are very likely honing in on which federal crimes, statutes apply here as the "new york star ledger" reports, what began as a preliminary inquiry into whether federal laws might have been implicated has morphed into a deepening criminal probes to determine whether federal laws have actually been broken. and finally, it reus that christie's declarations of innocence don't mean a thing right now. kendall coffey is an msnbc political analyst and brian murphy is an msnbc contributor as well. and former manager of politics.nj.com. let me start with kendall coffey. give us the significance the fact that we heard that drewniak, his press guy, his spokesperson, christie's spokesperson has been called before a grand jury. what does that tell us? >> welsh it's a very serious development.

the other part has to do with the port thrt, david samson.ils that we showed on the show a few months ago, the law firm is getting in touch with him. so he seems to be a significant player on two fronts in this. >> i think if you look at it from the federal grand jury's perspective, it's going to be some sort of affirmation as to who we should believe in the she tells/he tells saga that we have right here. that's all we have, she says or she says really between kim and dawn zimmer. and the master report went to great pains to try to diss anything that dawn zimmer said with varying degrees of success depending on how much you want to believe out of certain things that they said there. but now if you can get a lawyer who presumably has a certain degree of believability in this case because he really shouldn't have any ax to grind, although obviously he's on retainer for the city of hoboken. he's also putting his reputation on the line. he's putting his law license on the line if he's caught in a lie. then the federal grand jury is going to look

when we -- focusing back on paul fishman and the federal investigation, whether it's dealing with david samson closure, we know a couple things this week. we know from judge jacobson's ruling she's basically saying, yeah, there's a federal investigation under way and we know there's this grand jury that's taking some testimony. it suggests to me at least as a layman that paul fishman's office believes a federal crime could be involved which would put it in his jurisdiction. how long, do you have an expectation or a sense how long these things usually take to put together? are we talking about something that a year from now we're still going to be waiting for some kind of indictment or is this something that we could see in the next few weeks? >> i doubt it's going to be the next few weeks. it's more likely a year from now. in the district of columbia we have a federal investigation of our mayor that started three years ago. there was a primary where he was running. he doesn't know whether he's going to be indicted. so these things take as long as they take for the prosecutor to get evidence. y
