joining me now is the "new york times" senior national security correspondent, david sanger.e's with me in hanoi trying to make sense of all of this. david, we have had a bit of a roller coaster day. there were some expectations for this summit, not massive but some. then it all came to a grinding halt. they didn't even have lunch. it.lates and nobody sitting but we had conflicting accounts as the day has worn on. the president saying that they demanded an entire lifting of sanctions. what did you think when he said that? >> well, it made me wonder what kind of sanctions they all had in mind. but certainly the united states has been fairly consistent in its position across administrations that you can't relieve the core sanctions that the united nations has put up against the north koreans until they fully denuclearize. that's the only leverage the united states has. even as you do partial lifting then the russians and chinese as we've seen in the past eight months since the singapore meeting, the first summit, feel freer to lift their sanctions and it looks like they've been

chief of the atlantic, paul a la reed covers the justice department and the white house for cbs david sanger a national security correspondent and senior writer for "the new york times" 0 and david no, ma'am murrah covers to the white house for the "washington post" so i know you guys aren't over your jet lag because i certainly am not having covered this summit in hanoi. david you have a piece in, an extensive one in "the new york times" writing about what went wrong with these talks, you heard the national security advisor give his take. what is the bottom line? >> i think the bottom line, margaret, is that they sent the president of the united states halfway around the world into a negotiation that had not been, not only not precooked but basically they had nothing when he landed. usually the way summits work for all of us who have covered these is, the real estate comes in as a closer on the final ten percent. what was clear here was that this was not just the get to know you meeting that happened in singapore, this was a meeting that was intended to go work out 0 a schedule or the denuc

. >> david sanger from the new york times. pres. rump: i know, david. >> six months ago when you spoke or eight months ago in singapore, you said if you do not have something in six months we should come back and ask you about it. in that time, you have seen chairman kim increase the number of missiles produced and continue to produce more nuclear material. that has been a pressure point on you because he is showing the arsenal's getting larger while this is going on. pres. trump: some people, david, are saying that, and some people are denying that. they have shots from above, way above, and some people are saying that and some people are not. i could have taken that out today, but i think you and others would have said we did not get enough for what we would be giving up. do not forget we are partners with a lot countries on this. with the sanctions. we have a whole big partnership with the united nations and many countries, including russia, china, and others. and then of course south korea is very important to this whole thing an

david sanger from the "new york times" joins us and the author of "the perfect weapon" which dives intoin cyberspace. good to have you here. we know north korea has attacked the u.s. in cyberspace for years now. perhaps most famously the sony hack. is it surprising and worrisome during the trump/kim negotiations? >> i don't think it is at all surprising. the two are deeply related. it is clear at this point that kim jong-un has calculated that he needs to keep this freeze on missile tests and on nuclear tests going even while he's producing more nuclear material. he's got to show that he can continue to exercise some degree of influence and power and the power of disruption. so cyber is the natural way for him to turn. this is not just true for him. it's true of course for the russians, iranians in a different form for the chinese. so it was no surprise to me that when we were all out in hanoi watching the president and kim negotiate that his hackers around the world, not just based in north korea were busily at work. >> david, you and jim and the team in hanoi did a great job over ther

during a press conference trump was questioned by david sanger of "the new york times."." >> can you give us a little more detail? did you get into the question of actual dismantling the complex? seem willinges he to take all of that out? pres. trump: he sure does. he would do that, but he was the sanctions for that. there is plenty left after that. and i just felt it was not good. mike and i spent a long time negotiating and talking about it to ourselves. i felt that particular -- as you know, that facility, while very big, it wasn't enough to do what we were doing. >> he was willing to do yongbyon but you wanted more than that? pres. trump: we had a have more than that because there other things that you haven't talked about, that you haven't written about that we found. thatat was done a long titime a, but the people did not know about. second uraniume enrichment plant. pres. trump: e exactly. we brought many points of that i think they were surprised we knew. we had to do more than just the one level. if we did the one level and gave up all of that leverage -- it has taken a long
