david sanger. as i said, david, this is quite a story. who is this guy? who is this couple? to sell and to whom? >> there it really is a wild story, john. the engineer's name is jonathan toebbe. he and his wife on their own were to provide information on virginia class submarines. this is the set of secrets that the united states agreed finally to go share with australia about a month ago, the thing that sent the french government up the wall because they had a deal with australia. it's considered to be among the great secrets of the united states because this is the neck tolling that allows the submarines to run basically limitless distances and very quietly. what the indictment doesn't say, though, is who he tried to sell it to. but as you read between the lines, it seems like it was a friendly country. it doesn't seem like he was trying to sell it to the russians or chinese. >> how did they get caught? >> well, i want was a mix of some very sophisticated methods used by mr. toebbe and his wife and some really sloppy ones. so in their communications back and forth to this

. >>> here to discuss is david sanger, the white house and national security analyst for "the new york times." david, thanks for joining us. the chinese government claims they actually launched a spacecraft, not a hypersonic missile. how credible is that? >> could well be that they, in fact, did launch a spacecraft and that it, in turn, could launch a hypersonic. we've seen the north koreans and the iranians at various moments conduct tests that would be useful for military purposes. but are under the cover of the space program. so it's entirely possible that what they are saying is literally true but also adds to their understanding of hypersonics. let's not forget, jake, who else is doing hypersonics? the united states and russia. so this is sort of the form of the new arms race. i'd be surprised if they weren't. >> reporter: the tests showed china made astounding progress on hypersonic weapons and far more advanced than u.s. officials realized. how could the u.s. government be so unaware of how far the chinese government was when it comes to developing this weapon? >> we haven't con

joining me for more is david sanger, white house and national security correspondent for "the new york to see you. when it comes to north korea and this ballistic missile test, i saw it described as possibly the most significant demonstration of north korea's military might since joe biden has taken office. what are they trying to do here? >> i think, kate, the first thing they're trying to do is get some attention. so far the biden administration's method of dealing with north korea has been largely to ignore them. they've put a lot of effort into trying to get back into the 2015 iran nuclear deal. there's been no particular major outreach to the north koreans. the north koreans realize that president biden isn't interested in the kind of summits that president trump had. and so i think a good deal of this is pay attention to me. they also want to see if they can convince us that they have perfected the submarine launches that will was discussing before. as will pointed out, their subs are not exactly hard to find. it's the chinese tests that i think are more worrisome at this point t
