i want to bring in cnn safety analyst and former faa safety inspector, david soucie. avid, to the point that that richard quest was just making, it's almost miraculous that and based on the team that was in the plane, the safety kind of elements that are on the plane, the fact that at this point in time, there is no loss of life. there are 15 injuries, two that are critical. are you surprised by that? >> you know, everybody keeps saying it's miraculous that there are no fatalities. but i've had a little bit of a different perspective in that i was present at the 1987 crash of a dc nine in denver, which was on its way out, and it ended up crashing on the runway and flipping over upside down. and at that time, these seats, these 16 g seats were not on that dc nine, nor were the breakaway wings. it wasn't designed to break away. so the wings were still on the aircraft. at the time, this aircraft was upside down with passengers in it. so at that time there were 25 fatalities that we were not able to get out of the aircraft in time, and the weight of those wings were contin

i want to bring in david soucie, who's a cnn safety analyst and former faa safety inspector. david, thank you so much for being here with us. um, this of course, this crash has rattled all of us. and i think everyone's hearts just go out to these families who are so focused on on trying to get back their loved ones who are clearly in grief right now for the shocking event. um, what were your thoughts as you were getting information, as you were hearing this information about these recovery efforts? >> i have to say, i'm extremely impressed with the care that they're taking for the recovery crews. that's something that's rarely mentioned is just the stress and the anguish that the the recovery teams go through. but that's not to discount the families and what they're going through as well. and the ntsb has a transportation, uh, group that what they do is they make sure that the families have the same level of counseling and the same level of help as well. so the ntsb has made some great strides forward with that. so, again, uh, the aftermath of these things will last a lifetime

and joining us now is cnn's safety analyst, david soucie, who was a safety inspector at the faa. so good to have you here. you are a voice of knowing, and you know exactly how these things go down. what is the first thing you think investigators should look at or will look at? >> well, one. >> thing that. >> stands out to me real clearly is the fact that this aircraft, when he when pete, i think it was the eyewitness said that they hit hard up front. typically if this was an aircraft that had undergone a side a side wind or some kind of gust, you wouldn't describe it as a hit hard like nothing happened before then. so the first thing i'd be looking for is to see if a physical inspection of the airplane to see if the landing gear is still in the in the wing or not in the wheel wells, because that would tell you whether they were extended or not or whether they were crushed on the landing. those are the first things i would look at. also look at the fuselage to see if it has any cracks or bends in it from that hard landing, but that would give you a lot of clues as to what actually

cnn safety analyst david soucie drew some similar observations about what may have caused the crash, including some of those questions about the landing gear. i'd like to play that and get your response. >> here. >> there are a lot of clues that you can see right away. the things i'd be looking at right away are was it a hard landing? we look at the the fact that the the landing gear aren't on the aircraft. so are they there or did they get torn off in the accident? or perhaps they weren't even down at the time. so there's a lot of questions. uh, but i think a quick visual of the aircraft on site would give them a lot of clues as to where this goes. >> mary, you mentioned the fact that you believe that that the landing gear snapped off upon impact, but how could investigators prevent something like this from happening in in the future? is it a matter of deicing the plane, clearing the runway, or simply not flying or landing in conditions as dangerous as the ones you were describing? >> well, you know, every plane has its own limits, and this one has more crosswind limits than, for ex
