ktvu's david stevenson is outside the station. what is going on? >> reporter: let's go right now to the live camera where we can show you footage of one woman being arrested. taken up the escalator at the civic center bart station by bart police. this woman we believe is a protester who was down in place at civic center bart station for the protest. this would be the third protest in three weeks. so far we have seen little sign of protesters gathering above ground here. you can see some of the bart police down stairs at the ticket center. so far many riders knew a lot about the protest and they took steps to make sure they will be long gone by the time the protest happened. >> reporter: he is checking out of his office early this afternoon, anxious to avoid a bart protest. >> crowds and pandemonium and i don't want to go anywhere near it. >> reporter: pandemonium from last monday and the shut down of the stations today prompted many bart riders to plan for the worst. >> i am going to try to leave early. i heard about the bart protest. >> worries me

david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> thehooker group made good on its threat. it says bart violated free speech protections and the group hacked into a bart website and posted contact information for 2,000 bart customers. ktvu's maureen naylor examined that group and learned interesting information, she will have that at 5:30. our coverage continues as david stevenson mentioned, you can track changes on our website, www.ktvu.com, click on the bay area tab. >> reporter: residents are evacuated and a neighbor is on edge after a gas leak in oakland. ktvu's paul chambers is live with what caused this leak. >> reporter: people have mixed emotions, some are upset, can't get to their cars, inside their hopes, other are happy to be okay. they hoped to have this wrapped up an hour ago but listen, you can hear gas coming from the exposed pipe. there is also debris being -- coming out of the ground. here is what we know, 2:15 this afternoon a pg&e contractor was working, while working he struck and cut a gas line. it's unsure what hit that line and the leak caused for eva

david stevenson is live on market street now. so david, what is going on there? >> reporter: well, frank, we've watched this unfold since 4:40. take a look between the trolley and the bus passing by, you can see a ladder truck and people standing out in front of 799 market. behind that building, we have videotape of this, there is a pipe that has burst and is flooding out of a second story building. this building houses a shopping center on its first and second floor and at about 4:45 this afternoon people began streaming out of that store and we're told the managers began evacuating people from the eight-story building because of the burst pipe. firefighters arrived on the scene shortly after, followed by the police department. they went into the back of the building to figure out where the pipe burst and began to work to contain it. people gathered out on the sidewalk waiting to see how soon they can get back into the building. you can see them standing outside of the building right now. we've seen a number of employees wearing customary blue shirts go streamin

ktvu's david stevenson is there now with what led up to all of this. dave smud. >> reporter: look behind me. the gentlemen is talking to -- gentleman is talking to people who is wanting to go home. this has been going on for a half hour since the civic center bart station was closed down. we have pictures from the scene, just a half hour ago. you see one man was arrested in the course of the protest. he was taken away in handcuffs. he is one of three that was arrested. guards shut the gates down about 5:30. they directed people out towards other bart stations. powell station closed at 5:45. above aground one protester told us why he came to the protest this week. >> police should be disbanned and turned over to the local police. they act in any fashion they chose. >> reporter: you can see the gentleman is directing people trying to make their way home. good news is we discovered in talking to people, people were aware the protest would be taking place. a number of people made plans to find alternate transportation to get home and avoid this happening.

ktvu's david stevenson talked to ed lee tonight about what changed his mind. >> reporter: ed lee and nine others are set to hit the stage here. this forum comes after the mayor promised not to run. he told us today about the person who pushed him to campaign. >> my second, my first campaign was senior class in high school and i won that one. david stevenson has been filing reports all evening long. >> reporter: at this hour the pound station is close to outbound traffic but the montgomery state -- station opened at 6:30 the civic center station is where the protests began just after 5:00. a handful of protesters gathered on the platform, they were angry about a fatal shooting last month be today's protest was organized by the international hackers group known as anonymous and respond to protest for bart can cell phone service for three hours. bart officials say it was a safety measure. >> we are allowed to determine time, place and manner. >> we should be able to protest the biggest in the line, oh, we are on public property user for public goods as you are on public property. >> a number of protesters wore masks. protesters gathered above the plaza and march down market street. so far no word from san francisco police in terms of the number of arrests. but we have not seen in reports of incidents of violence so far this evening. david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. >> they will give you a live look now of what's happeni

david stevenson joins us from san francisco to explain what went wrong and the condition of the injured. >> reporter: i'm standing at illinois and 19th street here in san francisco. it is the site of a loft-style apartment building under construction. in the upand coming system. but work has essentially stopped for the day at cal/oshas and representatives from the county office look into haas -- into what caused a sudden collapse. that accident happened around 8:00 this morning. it sent four workers to the hospital. three with critical -- with critical condition. and we spoke to the main contractor on this project. he said three carpenters were standing below the 6th floor, inspecting a concrete below. a fourth carpenter was standing on the concrete above their head. we're told that a 115 by 15- foot frame supporting that concrete pour collapsed above the head and sent all four men tumbling 30 feet down a three- story shaft. >> it's the efficient of having a large wall fall on these guys and fours them town -- it's the equivalent of having a large wall fall on these guys and forcing the

david stevenson is live with one of the costs from yesterday. >> reporter: the money went to reshuffle buses and bring out more drivers. police protesters and b.a.r.t. riders are gearing up for another possible protest next monday morning. >> i don't think they are getting any sympathy from b.a.r.t. riders. >> reporter: san francisco b.a.r.t. riders today said they are angry about the recent protests that have stalled train service. >> i think they need to stop, they're doing more harm than any good can come of it. >> reporter: activists say the protests are needed to confront police abuses. they are also angry about b.a.r.t. cutting off cell phone service prior to a protest a week ago. >> we are going to continue until we see a policy and practice from b.a.r.t. >> i haven't haven't been able to find that out. we do budget for overtime on a yearly basis. it's not a huge cost to the organization. >> reporter: it's also unclear how the protests are affecting ridership. b.a.r.t. estimates 292,000 people road trains yesterday. the protest began at 5:00 p.m. that's 1,000 more people than ro

david stevenson spoke to the friend of that hit and run driver about what happened today. >> reporter: the 9-year-old boy was hit in this intersection after leaving the phillies- giant's baseball game with his parents. police believe the hit and run driver was drunk. his friend tells us what happened. at 10:30 last night a white truck drove the wrong way up montgomery street striking two people and hitting two cars before racing away. today white is in critical condition after san francisco medical hospital. a 58-year-old woman suffer add foot injury. police are crediting 15 witnesses with helping to identify the alleged driver. >> there were a ton of people running after the car trying to stop him. >> reporter: hayward police arrested 21-year-old andrew vargas in that city an hour later. san francisco police said he tested over the legal alcohol limit. >> investigator from san francisco took witnesses over to hayward to identify the vehicle as well as the suspect in this case. >> reporter: ktvu has learned vargas just graduated with a business administration degree from cal state eas

we want to go to ktvu's david stevenson who is live where the protests began. >> reporter: i am outside the civic center bart station. you can see the protesters who remain on the scene after marching from union plaza to the civic center bart station, discovering they could not go down because it was shut down. some crossed the street, some marched down market street. a lot have been standing by the civic center bart station, long with a lot of police officers in riot gear. they are guarding the entrance and exit to the station. they are making sure people can exit and come out above while others can't enter the station. this began an hour ago. protest centered around several shootings that have taken place over the last couple years, including one in july. this was sparked by an incident in which bart officials shut down cell phone service at civic center bart station to stop a protest on that platform. that outraged a group called anonymous, they set up the protest for today using twitter and facebook. we spoke to one of the plotesters, he -- one of the protesters. >> how many people
