i want to bring in david vitale.icago board of education and was present during yesterday's negotiations. thank you so much. i know the negotiations went very late last night, so we appreciate your time this morning. what is the impasse at this hour? >> well, as best as we can tell, it revolves around two issues. one in respect to recall and job security for teachers. and the implementation of a new evaluation system which is, in fact, mandated by a new state law in illinois. >> what is the situation this morning with the children and with the parents that are trying to figure out what to do with their kids? >> well, in anticipation, we had set up a plan where we would open 144 schools to help take care of and feed our kids to the extent that their parents were unable to take care of them. i would also point out that the faith-based community here in chicago, sister agencies, public libraries, park district, police department as well as a variety of not for profits are also providing a variety of activities for our k

school board president david vitale was hopeful that tuesday is the last day teachers will be away from the classroom he agrees with mayor emmanuelle, the strike never should have happened. it's taking them out what appears to us as more time than it should. >> it was totally avoidable. the ripple effects of the contract breakdown are already surfacing for starters close to 400,000 students are simply killing time until the strike ends until then this cta is offering them free buses in train rides in the meantime. a two day strike is hardfar from ideal and everyone knows it could get much worse in 1987 teachers walked out for 19 days class's didn't resume until october back then. the offer was a 3 percent raise in the first year in 2 percent raises in years two, 3 in. bore. c a t u is focusing not on the money anymore but teachers do not like the evaluation process proposed. we should not be keeping kids out of school. david vitale the school board president went home tonight of round 7:00 or so and while others remained here on site going over a lot of the technical things he and other

we've heard from the school board president david vitale last night and he is saying this should be resolved today. >> look, i'm on my way out there today. i'm on the phone with folks in chicago all weekend long. both sides did a lot this weekend to try to get to resolution. >> but -- >> but what's happened is they were so far apart, the union has been raising these issues for months. for months. because they want to make sure that teachers -- if you listen to teachers, in chicago, they're saying we're open to the longer day. but let's actually make sure that the time that we have with kids is about teaching and learning, not about test prep. and so that's -- so when you listen, what's happened is this weekend, because no one wants a strike. we want to serve kids. what happened is this weekend finally there was enough kind of movement, and i'm cautiously optimistic that there will be more and more movement. that the teachers want to make sure they can help kids and have the tools to help kids, and they can't have things like social workers, and wraparound services. that's what it's really ab
