good evening, i'm paula ebben. >> i'm david wade. officers were called there for a fight between roommates, but for you tonight as we start in east boston with beth germano. beth? >> reporter: well police say that domestic violence calls are the most unpredictable. this is certainly no prediction. the two officers are in critical, but stable condition after answering up a call here on gladstone street apparently for a dispute over a thermostat. what happened next was completely unprovoked. it's described as a ferocious fire fight on gladstone street that left two officers fighting for their lives. 27-year veteran richard cintolo and 12-year veteran matthew morris. what was a domestic violence call to this home turned into a deadly -- turned into a deadly call. >> when the officers arrived they were met by a victim at the door who had claimed that his roommate had pulled a large knife on him. >> reporter: when the two officers entered, police say they were met with a hail of gunfire in a hallway. the suspect 33-year-old kirk vest and
