webb has our update. >> reporter: police searched cars for escaped killers david sweat and richard matt. law enforcement sources told cbs news d.n.a. from both escapees was found in a vacant cabin that had been broken into near wolf pond in the saranac lake region in new york within the past 24 hours. the d.n.a. break comes after hundreds of officers swarmed a rural area in western new york near the pennsylvania border over the weekend. brandy thompson says she saw to men who looked like the escapees in her backyard. >> i told them they're suspicious trying to turn around and covering themselves was very suspicious to me. >> reporter: the lead turned up nothing and the search in that area was called off. as the manhunt moves forward, cbs news has confirmed a second prison employee identified as gene palmer was suspended as part of the investigation into the escape, but so far no charges have been filed against him. brian webb for cbs news, new york. >> sweat and matt are both on the most wanted fugitives list. >>> their son was the latest victim of gun violence in the district. now the f

webb says they are on the trail of his partner. >> reporter: police caught up with the state murderers richard matt and david sweat just before 4:00 friday afternoon near the village of malone, new york, near the canadian border. investigators say a border patrol agent shot and killed matt while sweat remains on the run. police swarmed the area after a man reported he found a spilled liquor bottle. they say matt was shot during an attempted carjacking. roads in the area were immediately blocked after the shooting. >> the i think that they probably have a really good lead and are closing in on him. >> reporter: what do you hope will happen? >> that they catch him. >> reporter: they focused on a second cabin where sweat's dna was discovered. the pair broke out of the prison in dannemora on june 6. investigators say they used power tools to cut through their cell wall a brick wall and steel steam pipes before they emerged through a manhole near the prison and made a run for it. two prison employees have been arrested in connection with the escape. matt was serving 25 years to life for kidnapping and killing and dismembering his forme
