. >> david weiss out of the justice department who has been investigating hunter biden for many years now is using this grand jury now, indicating more charges to come, and indictment perhaps out of the grand jury of california against the president's son hunter biden. what we know about the grand jury investigation is that we don't have a full idea of the scope of it. we do know that it is likely very much about the business dealings of hunter biden, and perhaps the fact that he did not pay some of the taxes in 2017 and 2018, and something that he tried to have a plea deal at the misdemeanor level that fell apart on the charges in delaware and now the special counsel is looking to the charges in california and something that weiss signaled he would do before, but the other thing is that this is subpoenas for documents and testimony including a subpoena to the brother of the president james biden who is somebody who has insight into hunter biden's income, and some other financial interests, and that is one of the reasons that james biden may be brought into the grand jury to testify.

special counsel david weiss c convened a grand jury and subpoenaed the president's brother in the investigation into hunter biden's business dealings. appointing a grand jury may suggest that weiss is preparing to bring new charges against hunter biden, who is already facing gun possession charges back east in delaware. let's discuss with cnn senior justice correspondent evan perez and legal analyst carry kardaro. explain what sources are telling you. >> we know this is an ongoing investigation that's been ongoing for more than five years now. the special counsel is moving to get testimony, documents for a numb of witnesses, including james biden, hunter biden's uncle, brother of the president. and this is all ab his business dealings, particularly the years 2017, 2018 when hunter biden fail ed to pay his taxes on tim. that money has been repaid, but this is still part of an investigation because he didn't pay it when he was supposed to. so that is still a focus of the special counsel. this is supposed to be covered by the plea agreement that blew up spectacularly, as you remember back in june.
