thursday, he spoke to david westin about his new book, "market mover."the most important move we made was to buy inet, we got the best technology on the street. a lot of the high-frequency firms use some version of inet today. we gained market share. when i think about the 47 acquisitions we did, the only one we had to do independent the price was inet, we were institutional risk. we were losing market share and money every day and we didn't have any technology on the shelf that had proven great faith. the rest of the acquisitions were optional and we were using that to build upon further strength. david: then 2008 happened. stress on everybody, including you to clear the trades coming through. but there were reforms afterward and in your book, you said that jamie dimon called you up and not a friendly way. bob: there were some four letter words there, but i would say our systems worked well through the great credit crisis. we were hitting volumes we only saw in the lab, that was nerve-racking. we bent but did not break. there was a professional disagree

i am david westin. s reported third-quarter earnings, narrowly missing on revenue but showing strong profit growth and increased efficiencies and reduced cost. we welcome david abney, chairman and ceo of ups. as i say, strong earnings. what stood out for you? david a.: the domestic operations, for sure. we reduced unit costs year-over-year by 2.5%. every package that went through the network, 2.5% less cost, which gave us positive operating leverage as cost reduced more than the gain in revenue. we were happy with those results, which sets us up for good peach season this year. david: how did you do it? how did you reduce cost 2.5%? that is not easy to do. david a.: first, it would be our strategy. we focused on e-commerce. we have embraced it. we leaned in because we knew that is where the world was going. then we made investments in automating our facilities, optimizing our dispatch, and just a lot of technology. then it takes good, solid execution, which i am proud of our team for doing that. at the s

i'm david westin. let's get a check on the markets , a big day in the markets. is abigail doolittle. abigail: it certainly is not pretty, rather bearish. the dow, s&p, nasdaq all down close to 2%, the worst day since august, the second- bid down day in a row. investors going into haven bonds, also going into the yen, gold, as they flee stocks. we are looking at the worst two days for the s&p 500, major averages, and futures going back to the beginning of august. yesterday we had the big down day on the disappointing ism manufacturing print, when investors became careful, some strategists calling it an inflection point to the downside, saying recession is imminent. the lowest level going back to 10 years. today, investors running with that. those fears spreading to trading in europe. investors fleeing risk assets. across the board sector and stock wise. all 11 sectors are lower in the s&p 500. high-quality names such as apple, visa, berkshire hathaway, boeing also lower. not many places to hide for investors as we are contending with the selloff. it is not new, w
