david wright is at the white house with the story. good morning to you, david. >> reporter: good morning, eva. this morning the white house is regrouping after a difficult week on multiple fronts. there was blistering criticism this week over the president's syria policy, controversy over the decision to host next year's g7 summit at the president's own golf resort and finally damage control after the acting chief of staff seemed to confess that there was a quid pro quo with ukraine. that's the new t-shirt being sold by the trump campaign featuring the president's pompadour right there over the "o." it's a phrase that stood out in acting chief of staff mick mulvaney's press briefing this week in which mulvaney for the first time acknowledged the administration withheld military aid to ukraine in part to pressure them to investigate corruption. >> you just described is a quid pro quo. it is funding will not flow unless the investigation until the democratic server happens as well. >> we do that all the time with foreign policy. and i ha

abc's david wright is right there at the white house. david, what's going on with the about-face? >> reporter: well, good morning, dan. this is a rare retreat for president trump and it came last night in a series of tweets. the president tweeting, based on both media and democrat-crazed, and irrational hostility, we will no longer consider trump national doral in miami as the host site for the g7. we will begin the search for another site immediately. the decision to hold the g7 at a trump resort was controversial from the start. acting white house chief of staff, mick mulvaney, suggested that the president wouldn't be profiting from it. he said that this wasn't the only choice but he claimed it was the best choice. many were skeptical. the g7 takes place in june. miami can be a bit muggy in june. doral has struggled financially and last year there was reports of a bedbug infestation that meant that the hashtag, bedbug summit began to trend, dan. >> it's muggy in june and also the beginning of hurricane season. the white house, as you mentioned, said that the trump organization w

abc's david wright joins us from the white house with more. david, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, whit. the president is holding his head high, playing to the base with a growing list of grievances to the base. at a rally he trumpeted a tentative trade deal with china and blasted the impeachment inquiry. for the second night in a row president trump sought to escape the dizzying developments back home to trot out on the campaign trail where he denounced what he called -- >> the unholy alliance of corrupt democrat politicians deep state bureaucrats and the fake news media. there they are right there. >> reporter: the president also had good news to share. >> i just made a great china deal today. >> reporter: claiming significant progress in trade talks with the vice premier of china. >> there's nothing bigger than what we're doing with china and we have come to a very substantial faesub sta substantial phase one deal. >> reporter: he said the partial deal covers intellectual property, financial services and some agricultural products.

but we're going to begin our coverage here with abc's david wright who is right there at the white house. david, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, dan. we begin with some news. abc news confirmed the existence of a second whistle-blower prepared to corroborate the story of the first whistle-blower. that person's lawyer tells abc news that this second whistle-blower has direct knowledge of some of the allegations contained in the complaint. the complaint which, of course, touched off this impeachment inquiry. the existence of a second whi with direct knowledge of the president is significant because it challenges one of the main assertions trump has repeatedly made in his own defense. >> if you look at the whi's complaint is totally inaccurate because the conversation i had is absolutely perfect and most people who read it say the same thing. the whistle-blower never saw the conversation. >> reporter: the lawyer representing both whistle-blowers tells abc news his new client was interviewed by inspector general michael atkinson who followed up on the initial complaint. atkin
