the mayor of daytona is joining us now, can you provide context of what we are seeing, mayor? >> you are seeing a large community gathering. we opened up the beach and in public, an outlet for folks. you don't have movie theaters or theme parks, folks are looking outdoors to have a good time. they're typically young people between ages of 18 and about 30 years old. >> we saw an estimate of 5,000 people were apart of this congregation. what was your reaction when you heard or saw this mayor henry? >> we expected large crowds, my reaction was concerning. great concerned in large part because they were not practicing social distancing or wearing masks. that's my first concern and our beach, we are used to have large, large crowds. the biggest issue was affected. they were not practicing social distancing and they did not necessarily respond in a lot of ways that we wanted them to as it relates to the normal expectations of visitors. >> could police have done something to stop this before it developed into a dangerous situation? >> no. our police work very hard and they help to es

we are joined by the mayor of daytona beach. thanks for joining us. as we see the national death toll soar, crowds at your beach, i want to get your reaction when you saw those crowds gathering at daytona beach, what did you think? >> quite naturally, i was concerned. we didn't see much social distancing in those situations so i was alarmed and concerned. more concerned with the businesses and some of the impact that it had on them and seeing folks when they were off the beach not practicing social distancing when they were walking the sidewalks, and no one had on a mask very much. >> what are you doing to make sure it doesn't happen again? >> well, right now it's a lot different because the weather has taken a turn so it is now raining. that day we had a crowd of people who came from orlando and miami and they promoted it through social media and decided they would come to daytona beach for sort of a big celebration of sorts because they were happy to be out. now we are back to our normal setting where most folks are practicing social distancing. the
