but, i am telling you, i have been to daytona -- where we are at just north of daytona, many, many timesave never felt winds on the beach this strong, guys. >> steve: and, mike, in addition to the winds there at the beach, and, you know, there was plenty of warning over a couple of days where people were particularly on the west coast you have got to evacuate. any time there is a lot of wind with high profile vehicles like semis and stuff like that, they say stay off the road. when you were going from downtown jacksonville out to the beach. how many people were on the road other than tv weather guy? >> mike: you got that right. i did see a lot of first responders. obviously they are here watching over us to make sure that we are safe and free from harm. not a ton of vehicles. here is what i will say. you cross a couple of bridges to get from jacksonville to jacksonville beach. and on that road, it was a 10 and 2 grip. i was holding on for dear life because, you know, our vehicles were swinging. they were swaying in these winds. and if you are driving like a big semi-truck on the intersta

they're up near daytona beach and some other family in central florida. they're kind of hunkered down at this point as you. well know, it's batteries flashlight. and make sure you have enough food and supplies to last you at least 1 to 2 weeks. if that power goes out. okay. well, i hope this stays safe. thanks. you too. okay, here's another live look at florida. this is a live camera from saint petersburg. the area barely visible right now with all that wind and rain. now, right before milton made landfall, i spoke with nbc bay area's jay gray, who was about two hours south in fort myers. that's also on the west coast. fort myers police have said that they are done patrolling at this point, that they are off of the streets now. and so anyone who is here is on their own until this storm moves through, about 400,000 people in mandatory evacuation zones here in lee county, which is the fort myers area. good news is we've been out on fort myers beach. we've been around fort myers. it looks like a lot of people did listen to those warnings did move to higher g

they're experiencing out in tampa so for folks in daytona they consider that a win.re that will begin on wednesday in the morning, the impact from milton really going to be out here primarily in the overnight hours on thursday and into a thursday morning and afternoon because the multiline phone for the west coast of florida has been slower now, one point we were forecasting wednesday afternoon now it's in the overnight hours on wednesday. so those are all key concerns but on this northern edge averted center circulation could go that only is that northern edge of milton going to be a lot without flooding but also with the storm surge as well. so a lot of issues here in daytona but this is only 1 of millions of people in -- and millions was parked across florida bracing for these impacts. >> neil: great reporting, haley, thank you for that. not bad there yet but it will get very bad. we talk about these hundred mile-per-hour winds -- don't get that -- on the eastern part of the state but it could get very high. we also want to give you our sense of what's happening a

jeff, we'll start with you there in central florida and right along the east coast near daytona beachthey're not being asked to evacuate parts of daytona beach are if you're up against the immediate coastline near the atlantic. so for them, it's basically weathering the storm. so hunkering down food, water, testing the generator because they have to be ready for maybe to go without power for a week or two. and i have to tell you, even though central florida to daytona beach, where i have family, even though they're not at that direct landfall zone, they're still being impacted here. yeah. and they all pretty much have ptsd. a lot of people in central florida, because there are only two years out from cleaning up from hurricane ian, which just left them with some historic damage that they're still cleaning up from where some homes along the beach were, were just leveled or washed out to sea and kris. it's amazing. we're talking about ptsd. this is just from a couple of weeks ago. even for many people in florida, including your parents. yeah, my parents are. you saw that live shot of ta

daytona beach, specifically, stretching into portions of of central florida into orlando that's where you can see the heaviest of the rain is right now. definitely folks in palm coast stretching down to oak hill, that's where you'll see the most torrential downpours happening. and for that no surprise we've got the flood alerts up for a good chunk of the region. the flash flood risk there today specifically centered from melbourne to orlando and points north of there. we're going to see that wind down for places like tampa and sarasota as we see dryer conditions. still, it's the east coast especially this morning we'll to watch for the potential of flooding. it was incredible flooding from the west coast into the overnight hours. we saw really impressive rainfall amounts happening in places like st. petersburg, where in a 1-hour window we received 5 inches of rain. that is a 1 in 1,000-year event kind of rainfall. and you can see over 18 inches in just a 24-hour period. so a flash flooding emergency was ongoing for folks there. that has since expired, but we still have flash flooding

you hit daytona beach.here are some predictions daytona could get 18 inches of rain by this time tomorrow night. so we have gone from the west coast to the east coast down to the south. there is a hurricane here, laura, i think it was 2017, hurricane irma. irma came up the west side of florida. it impacted 67 counties in florida. all 67 counties were impacted by this hurricane. earlier today at day break governor desantis said 51 counties will be affected by this storm. that gives gives you a sense about how large this will be. the florida division of emergency management sent out a tweet on x a short time ago. here it is. milton is approaching landfall along the west central florida coast. all right? so they said treat this as if it is a tornado. and the warning went out for tampa, st. petersburg and clearwater. well there is 3.2 million people who call that area home. and so many of them have left and the reason they left is because of helene 13 days ago. we are in a hotel here in orlando. and just about

basically daytona beach in jacksonville, this area getting an onshore wind. this is going to at least create the potential for a brief spin up tornadoes. we get these cells that come off of the ocean, interact with the land, get friction and allow for that spin to happen very quickly. so the tornado threat, and i just checked from the storm prediction center, still around 2% within this area. so we can't, that's not negligible. we'd still need to leave that in as more of an immediate threat for this region, even though the eye is moving off, coat, off the coast, you can see the wind gusts here in daytona beach at 83 miles per hour sustained at 62. so still a very difficult next few hours, especially for the eastern seaboard. but let's just lay are on the other threats that are ongoing right now because we have had a large swath of over ten inches of rain fall from the sky. we're talking about two to three months worth rainfall in a matter of a day. this is just incredible. so the flash flooding that is ongoing across hillsborough county and to the north and e

daytona beach at 68.stay indoors along the coast of federal florida. we'll start to see improvements. orlando is at 51. tampa and st. pete, we'll get out there early, the first responders for anyone who needs help. the winds are dying down quickly on the west side. rainfall totals, this was insane last night. from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m., we had 5 inches of rain fall in st. petersburg. that's a lot of rain anywhere in the world. if you did the math on this, this was a one in one thousand year event there. the rainfall totals in 24 hours almost approaching 20 inches. that's why we had a lot of -- not the surge in ampa bay but flash flood warning. i-4, orlando to daytona beach under flash flood warnings from the heavy rain we had last night. willie, you know, it was a category 3. it wasn't a 4 or a 5. that's why we didn't have the 15 foot storm surge. we did have reports of 10 foot surge. we have yet to see what that damage does. we haven't seen the pictures from the barrier islands, you know, from sarasota south

how about daytona beach? we will see significant storm surges, three to five feet. especially as you get toward high tide tomorrow morning. we have water issues. saint augustine, daytona beach. we are now over 1 1/2 million people without power. there is that gust in sarasota, 97 in venice. as far as the storm surge goes, lawrence, from naples, port charlotte, inglewood, venice to sarasota. all of those areas have water in their downtown right now because the storm surge is currently at its max. >> bill, sarasota seems to be the place where it is maybe hit the hardest. >> reporter: we have seen pictures of stop signs underwater. i saw a report of a 10 foot storm surge. when you get 10 feet of storm surge and then you have wave action on top of it you're going to get not just water on the first floor, but potentially on the second floor. and these are all reports, lawrence, from the inland areas, or right on the side of the bay. we are not talking about all of these remote little barrier islands out here that people evacuated from. we are feel full of what that will

category three one 25 mile per hour winds over central florida exits around daytona beach up to about 85 mile per hour winds by thursday night. so again, thursday morning landfall thursday evening. it's out the other side. so again, tampa bay would be the first zone of impact. we could get up to 15in of rain and the storm surge up to 15ft for that western coast. and that's the same coastline of florida that got hit by helene just within the past two weeks. so this is going to be a real extremely tough go for this dangerous storm. and just remind me here the water temperature is so warm here. that's what intensifies these hurricanes. yes. great question. so the hurricanes all feed off that warmer water. it just kind of acts as like jet fuel for it. so when you get over those warmer waters, you get rapid intensification. so while we have category three projected on here, there is the chance maybe it stays a category four and goes up to a category four, maybe a five. or it could go down to a two. we just don't know the whole behavior of that until it gets up against the coastline. i thin

also towards daytona and also those speeches surrounding the area.g winds, heavy rains with the risk of tornadoes as we get into the early hours on thursday morning. our weather here will get better. certainly by about midnight or so, we will be out of the strongest winds and the rain will come to a quick and on the backside of hurricane milton. >> jesse: we keep hearing about these tornadoes. i am unfamiliar with the tornado factor during a hurricane. how does the hurricane give birth to a tornado? >> what happens to these bands, not so much around the centre but the outer rain bands you have a lower level wind here and they are increasing and you get the spin-off. and it is not unusual to get spin-off and week tornadoes with hurricanes. but we are getting some very strong rotation and the reason being is this is not a completely trackable system. we have the cold front come down and the jet stream is taking down in this jet stream, thankfully, is sharing the storm and that's why it dropped from a category five to a category three and the winds came

joining us now, "today" show co-host dylan dreyer who is in bradenton, florida, and chase cain in daytona beach, florida, and meteorologist angie lassman. bradenton was hit very hard. what are you seeing there when the sun rises? >> reporter: -- helene where the storm surge came up to about three feet. now, we did not get the storm surge here that we were expecting, but we did get wind gusts up to 102 miles per hour at the bradenton airport. we're seeing a lot more wind damage this time around. you can see these big trees just toppled over right into the streets. the crews were just here to tag the fact that the power line has been impacted by this tree here. so, you know, they didn't cut down the tree and clear the road completely because it is actually protecting folks from running into that power line that is hanging low over the street here. but, it is part of the reason why it explains that we have 500,000 people without people here, because the toppled trees come down and the power lines and we're causing just that ripple effect of no power here across the area. so, this whole storm

how about daytona beach? we will see significant storm surge of three to five feet here. high tide. water issues, saint augustine, daytona beach. one-and-a-half million people without power. there is that 102 gust in sarasota. as far as storage surge goes, i have seen pictures. venice, sarasota, all of those areas have water downtown now. because the storm surge is currently at its max. >> bill, sarasota seems to be the place where it is maybe hit the hardest. >> we have seen pictures of stop signs underwater. one report of ten foot of storm surge. so when you get ten feet of storm surge, and wave action on top of it, potentially on the second floor. and these are all reports lawrence from the inland areas. right on the east side of the bay. we are not talking about all these remote little barrier islands people evacuated from. we are fear l of what that will look like at daybreak. >> bill karins, thank you for that report. >>> with the hurricane bearing down on florida today, the stock market closed once again at an all-time record high. something that donald trump said

i think all the forecasting right now is for daytona beach, the east coast experiencing excess of 75 miles an our window. it is rare when you go west to east, it is more common across the atlantic. there is a trofts of the east coast of florida, sometimes it hits a trough and it stalls out or changes directions where it weakens. it is way different on the west coast of florida, that is a gradual slow that comes in and the entire way. it is almost a perfect ramp for this storm and this surge to follow, to build on top of the other. when the water comes in, it's five, 10, 15 feet high and the waves are crashing on top of that. that is on homes and buildings cannot stand anymore. that is what florida on the west coast is looking at this hours. >> martha: tampa bay, that is just a breeding ground to bring that storm surge. we will see how it goes, we are plaintiff mccrank for everybody, thank you very much. we will speak more tea in the coming hours. hurricane milton from above to measure its strength and to send signals back down so we can all get an update on where it is going. listen

daytona had an 87 mile-per-hour wind gusts. sarasota at 102.king where the storm is now, that is moving off into the atlantic. there are still some mornings and will dwindle as we go through the day. a lot of that is because we are still pushing water back toward the coast. they're still storm surge warning. jacksonville, daytona, cape canaveral. could still see 3-5 feet. that makes a big difference. that's why we got so lucky over here. the winds will start to go down. daytona 55ish as people that away goes down into the 20s. breezy. why is milton not going to impact the northeast or the southeast? because we've got this jet stream in this cold front that's keeping everything south. now of course milton is not of course the end of the season by any means. today is actually the anniversary of october 10th, the big cat 5 in the panhandle of florida, hurricane michael. we will keep tracking what is happening with milton. now back to you, george. >> george: that is encouraging news and encouraging forecast. ginger thanks so much. eva pilgrim in at

it's still a category one storm as it pushes in those showers just north of daytona beach. another way to look at a hurricane could also be by the pressure down here. right now it's at 980 millibars. it went down to 897. so just the ferocity of that storm as it pushed through florida was very impressive and just a really life changing situation for those people there. as we go throughout the morning, it will quickly push on east and out into the atlantic later on. by this afternoon as well. we are also looking at still the warnings up and down the florida coast, up towards parts of charleston, parts of georgia as well, where that flash flood threat could remain for today as those heavy rains just pound down on that part of the region. those gusty winds still at times bringing that dangerous surf and that storm surge, which could range today 3 to 5ft. so a situation worth watching. and as the sun rises, we just think of everybody in florida and those areas affected. i'll be back with a look at our local weather in just a few minutes. back to you guys. all right. we will chec

you can see right now, daytona beach winds, gusting to 83 miles per hour. and on this radar, all you have to do is really just follow the rain bands to see the direction of that wind and because it's coming off shore, because the eye is moving off the eastern coastline of florida. this is where we're getting that onshore component and that is going to push up water from the atlantic. and therefore, national hurricane center has continued the storm surge warning for the treasure coast all the way past the florida georgia border. this is where we have three to five feet of storm surge potential. and we've lowered the numbers here in tampa bay. we saw the reversal reverse storm surge because of the placement of the i just south and siesta key. but there is still some elevated surge values across extreme southwestern portions of the state. this storm dumped a lot of rain. in fact, you can clearly see it on this radar, estimated rainfall total tampa, orlando, we're talking about two to three months it's of rain fell from the sky and it's not done yet in some loc

. >> category 1 well offshore just close to jacksonville and daytona beach. i'm going to talk more about this too coming up in just a bit but this has been a devastating storm. many people without power in the dark right now as they wake up. it's probably feeling a lot more eerie right now as people are heading out their doors after -- having to hunker down if they were not able to evacuate. more on that coming up in just a minute. >> all right. so the fury of that here in just a second. the -- we can also let you know when you look at the damage president joe biden sending millions of meals and thousands of personnel on the ground for the rescue and the response. right now, more than 3 million customers are in the dark in florida. the sun coming up and the headline is hitting. reports of deaths, injuries and extensive property damage. not only hurricanes, but tornadoes all throughout the state of florida. we're talking about maximum sustained winds of 120 miles an hour when milton roared ashore. just south of the tampa bay region. heavy rainfall in fact brou

we like to cover the front end, but i will say that from orlando to daytona, some of the big numbers came out of that storm up to 18.5in of rain in saint pete. some of the wind gusts were over 100, but even daytona this morning had an 87 mile per hour wind gust. the good news is milton is pulling away, so there's just a few more hours of a little bit of surge on the east coast of florida and some flash flood warnings that remain from all of that rain pushing through. but overall, i think first of all, florida did a great job getting people out of the areas they needed to and so right now it's seemingly, you know, better than it could have been, that's for sure. and that south of tampa route did very well. >> yeah. ginger and i know that you highlighted the tornadoes. i heard you talking to brad mielke on start here. and you were talking about how the tornadoes were different this time around in terms of how they looked. and typically they're pretty skinny, is what you were describing. i thought that was fascinating. if you can kind of touch on that. >> yeah. >> well, you look at the

which is also substantial and also unfortunately focused in the sae i--4 corridor from atlanta to daytona places have already seen six plus inches of rain already and we haven't even seen milton's center make landfall. near to the left of the track of the center is where we will see the heaviest rainfall. the area highlighted in pink is the highest risk of life-threatening and flash and urban flooding playing out tonight and thursday, including orlando, daytona beach, down to sarasota and near melbourne, also risk extending north and south of that, maybe in a more isolated fashion. next, i want to talk about the impacts of that much rain and what that kind of catastrophic flash flooding looks like. you will see water entering homes and businesses. people will be forced to be rescued and evacuated from flooded areas. you are going to have flooded roads that will make moving around evacuation difficult, and it's going to be a very dangerous situation to be out and about, another reason to shelter in place and you have this much rainfall in this type of flooding, places flood the don't norma

tampa, to cedar key, all the west coast all the way through the i-4 corridor, across orlando, to daytona devastating wind impacts, widespread power outages, structural damage, and that could lead to very unsafe environment where we tend to see post-storm fatalities in the dangerous environment that's left. additionally, we're expecting very heavy rainfall, 6 to 12 inches, amounts as high as 18 inches from heavily populated corridor from orlando to daytona beach. which could lead to widespread and flash flooding and urban flooding tonight into thursday in that area. that's an area where we lost 16 people to hurricane ian with tremendous flooding. there's a tremendous risk to life and property there. i do want to thank the administrator of fema for her team and coordination. and final my, i want to thank the noaa and hurricane hunters flying into milton for days now providing tremendously valuable direct data that has saved the forecast and warnings, thank you, mr. president. >> mike i know you're tired of hearing me say it, but i appreciate your constant input you're giving me and letting
