and spending all this time and weeks inside this school in southeast dc. one of the really compelling moments out woke me up is the school asked their students and only goes up to third grade they asked if they could describe through pictures things that make them sad in their community. these kids drew vivid images of bodies and people being shot to death. gunfights. funerals. gravestones and blood on the ground. these are not kids saying i'm struggling with my trauma they were not verbalizing it but here they were clearly showing that was on their mind. for me it illustrated the point that we focus so narrowly on the white suburban communities that goes through school shootings but in fact they kids that are overwhelmingly affected by gun violence is the everyday chronic threat that happens largely in black and brown communities in this country and we simply as a society do not care about as much. i convinced we don't shower those kids with supports in therapy as we do when school shootings occur but these kids live with it every single day. a researcher
