john dean is a rat for nixon? does that mean the president thinks that everybody who works in that white house should be loyal to him above everybody else and lie for him if they need to, protect him at any cost, be their roy cohn. >> i think it's pretty obvious the answer to that is yes. the extent to which he has compelled the member of his staff to subodor nate their morals and better judgment to whatever the narrative is donald trump wants to see on television i think is pretty obvious. i'm not sure i would call it orwellian because in orwell's universe they had some complexity and depth to them. truth isn't truth is kind of shallow. don't believe your eyes and ears is getting the subtext right in front. but there's some truth to that. he is communicating to a very small base of supporters and the people who are diehard loyal followers. you don't know how big that base is going to be. the more you ask him to internalize these contradictions, the slimmer an slimmer it is. >> how small is it? right now it's arou

that does not sound like a john dean figure as we -- as john dean has been remembered. and there is some suggestion in times story that mcgahn carefully told mueller that trump was acting within his executive power. he have that power. but if he acted for a bad motive, that could be obstruction. >> today the president and his legal team really don't know the extent of the discussions between mcgahn and the special counsel team. >> right. >> i also want to ask you about -- go ahead, david. >> i think this whole "new york times" story puts a lot of pressure on the president to sit down and talk to the general counsel. the general counsel now has so many facts or so many different points of information from mcgahn and probably others that it makes it more dangerous for the president to sit down with mueller. mueller has a lot of context from which to question him. >> just a quick reaction to the president's tweet. he's comparing mueller to infamous senator joseph mccarthy. what goes through your mind when you read that and hear it? >> i was horrified. this president doesn'

think john dean got it wrong. i think in this instance what we need to understand is the white house sanctioned this. mcgahn was interviewed. he talked about the things that he talked about. they did that with an understanding that they were going to talk to the special counsel, the executive privilege exists in this context but for purposes of speaking to an executive agency that is permitted. remember here the executive privilege piece, the d.o.j. is an executive agency. to the extent this information or gathering from the executive branch generally and from the white house goes before a grand jury, they have to ask the white house about that before that happens. same thing if they turned it over to congress. this is really a non-story in my view. >> we do know the president and his lawyers, they keep pointing out that he wanted mcgahn to cooperate. randy, do you think it is a sign the president has nothing to hide? >> first of all, there is an old saying in the business. i would respectfully submit that since m
