that week so how much has the government shutdown affected unemployment numbers here to discuss dean baker co-founder of the center for economic and policy research howard dean thank you for joining us they certainly know you being here now dean right off the bat how has this latest government shutdown influenced the october jobs numbers well it's really hard to say i mean i think the direct impact will be fairly modest are probably going to be twenty thirty thousand fewer jobs because of that from the government sector will be some indirect effect that this will be a little hard to pick up but you can have things you know we had national parks being shut down where you had areas where a lot of people would go in there for the national parks we have hotels restaurants are the business is related to that some of those will you know they might have otherwise been hiring some shut down altogether so you'll see an indirect impact there so we might see a falloff in told sixty seventy eighty thousand jobs less than what otherwise would have been there and these are part time not part time part t

way more dangerous than normal trade deals like nafta which are pretty damn bad to begin with as dean baker wrote in a recent piece for the huffington post free trade is not what the t.p. is all about the t.p. is about crafting rules that will favor big business at the expense of the rest of the population in both the united states and in other countries so why is the t.p. so friendly to big corporations it's easy they wrote it while the bush and obama administrations have kept the public in the dark about what's in the p.p. they've let big corporations not only look at draft versions of the treaty if you would let those corporations make changes to the fact in many cases the corporations wrote the first draft in the first place it shouldn't be any surprise then that president obama doesn't even want congress to look at the t.p. to push the u.s. into the proposed treaty as soon as possible he's proposing a special legislative trick called fast track that would prevent lawmakers from making any amendments to the t p p instead this treaty would be set right to the floor where it would have on
