joining me now fema administrator deanne criswell. thanks for joining us. many people are still missing across the six states hit by the devastating tornadoes, and is there a hope that some people might still be found alive in the rubble? >> good morning, jake. first i just wanted to start by saying my prayers go out to everybody across these states impacted by these events. we still do have reports of people that are missing and unaccounted for. i don't have exact numbers. the life-saving and life-sustaining priorities are continuing to be to find as many people as we can that might be trapped in this rubble. >> it's still a rescue mission, not just a recovery. there's still hope. >> i think there is still hope. we sent one of our federal urban search and rescue teams down to kentucky, they arrived through the day yesterday. they'll be able to assist the localities with their ongoing rescue efforts. i think there is still hope. we should continue to find as many people as we can. >> what are the state's biggest priorities right now? what do they need the m

joining us now is fema administrator deanne criswell. >> hi, pamela. as you heard from the illinois governor, as you're seeing there in kentucky, the devastation from this storm is widespread. damages across six states, and we're hearing reports of fatalities in five of those states. my heart and my prayers go out to all of the families that have been impacted by this. what i can say right now is our first responders that are out there in all of these communities are doing heroic efforts to try to continue the life-saving mission and try to find anybody that is still trapped that they can rescue. we are prepared to come in and support states as they need assistance. the president did give an emergency declaration to the commonwealth of kentucky earlier today. we have resources en route there right now, some already on scene. >> we heard there from the illinois official that it is now a search and recovery effort there at the amazon warehouse. you said first responders are still working at this hour trying to find sur vooefrs. do you realistically belie

fema administrator deanne chriswell and our teams visited the candle factory site, the decimated sitearlier today. we spoke with the leader of the search and rescue team and have the opportunity to thank some of his members. i saw on site a backpack that was left behind and a pair of shoes. and it represents the tragedy that this tornado has wreaked on this area of kentucky. we learned of a telephone that was recovered, a cell phone that recorded 27 missed messages. we've lost fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, and others. but as the governor so poignantly and powerfully stated, we will get through this, we will grieve together, but we will also recover together. and that is why we and the federal government are here today. i want to make it perfectly clear that we are here physically today, but we will be here tomorrow and the days, weeks, and months ahead until the recovery is complete. i want to express our tremendous thanks and admiration of the governor for his leadership of the people of kentucky. in a time like this, it is a time to come together, and that is

joining me now, fema administrator deanne criswalt, thank you so much for being with us. are working with search and rescue? >> okay as you mentioned this has been a devastating series of tornados and storms across the midwest, six states impacted and we're getting reports that five of those states are reporting fatalities. so such devastation to communities across the country right now. we have provided support right now to kentucky on where the president did authorize an emergency declaration earlier today. we have urban search and rescue teams that are on the way to support the amazing work that the first responders have already been doing. really heroic efforts on the ground, especially in mayfield, and many of these first responders, remember, are probably impacted themselves, their homes damaged or even destroyed. we're here to bring in additional support and help them as they continue their recovery and their response efforts. >> we've heard both from our reporters and just the images we're seeing, many homes and businesses completely gone. what assistance is being
