[applause] adam: good afternoon. thank you so much for coming to hear me speak today. it's been unusually rainy this may. i would like to begin by thanking all the great folks at the virginia historical society and the dispatch for sponsoring this talk. i really feel that the vhs is a gem i have not seen in any other state that i've been to. to begin, 150 years after the civil war, virginia prepared for another campaign. the commonwealth called this one civil war 150. understanding our past, embracing our future. at the conclusion in 2015, of the various remembrance activities and tourism promotion, a study found that the various sesquicentennial activities brought in more than 290 million tourist dollars to the state, and generated more than eight point or million -- $8.4 million in state tax revenue. as an 11 year resident of the commonwealth and as a historian, i cannot help but view this as a success, with one caveat. that is, at the conclusion of the study in august of 2015, there are no new posts on the civil w
