as voters head to the polls across michigan, our own joy reid was in dearborn talking to voters thereou talked to them? >> steve, we were in dearborn earlier this morning at hague elementary school. it's interesting, it's in wayne county, which i'm sure, as you know, steve, went for barack obama, 72% to about 26% over mitt romney in 2012, but the particular precincts we were at, the 40th and 44th precinct inside of this same elementary school, one of those precincts had gone for romney, one had gone for obama back then. it's a very mixed precinct. and we talked to a lot of voters who explained their reasons for who they were supporting and it all came down to one word, jobs. take a listen to what people had to say. >> reporter: what do you think that donald trump could do as president that some of the other presidents running couldn't do? >> i believe bringing jobs back. >> are you concerned? as a woman, just some of the comments that he's made that have offended women. this is a town with a lot of arab americans, the comments about immigrants and muslims. does that bother you? >> it

dearborn. he'll close out with a rally at the university of michigan. about. go blue. but that's expected to be a pretty big event. one of his trademark rallies. the question, as kristen was alluding to, is whether or not he can close the gap in michigan. now, our new nbc news/marist poll shows hillary clinton with 57% here and bernie sanders with 40%. but if you dig into the numbers a little bit, the numbers where you expand the democratic electorate show bernie sanders closing. and both campaigns are engaged in something of an expectation setting game. the clinton campaign doesn't want to be viewed as that far ahead because they know if it doesn't work out that way, it could be considered more of a loss for her, more of a win for bernie sanders. but the reality is there's a lot of pressure on him here. it's in some ways a potential last stand if he doesn't actually manage to post a good number. this is, of course, a state with a lot of those white working class voters that have come out for him in droves. it's also a northern state with a significant

dearborn. this was a little more of a mixed bag. a lot of people whose ancestry is scotch, italian, all of whom were drawn of course to henry ford's project here in michigan. so you have this really interesting mix of people. it was about half and half. we were in a place, two precincts, one went for romney and one went for obama. fair amount of consternation about donald trump. a lot of people saying i've never met anyone who likes this guy. where is he coming from. this isn't that's resonating here. but on the other hand, we spoke to a woman who was a donald trump supporter. he she discounts the things, elite putting him down. she boils it down it a simple thing. she lost her job in the auto plant. she saw and a hanafta and now w part-time jobs, getting by but doesn't have the money to send her kid to catholic school, private school, she doesn't have the numbmoney for her grandchil. >> black or white woman. >> white woman, maybe over 60. she basically just ignoring everything about donald trump that we're reporting that offends people. she says she doesn't believe that he really means that. she thinks he is for all americans, in her words, keep terroris

michigan, specially detroit. is that a message that's moving the needle there? >> good morning or good afternoon, craig. sure. voters in dearborn, where we were this morning and here in detroit, they do talk a lot about economic conditions, about jobs. i haven't heard too many people specifically mention income inequality, per se. what people are focused on is the idea, can they find and keep a good job? in this economy, in this state, that's a lot about detroit. it is a lot about the auto industry. that's a very important topic. when in the debate the other day, hillary clinton hit bernie sanders for his lack of support or not voting for a portion of the auto bailout being moved over despite the fact that he did support the bailout, that actually clearly shook the sanders campaign. they know that is really important here. take a listen to a radio ad that the sanders campaign is running here in michigan to try to counter that. >> it's not surprising his opponent is out with a new radio ad trying to distort the truth about bern ness's record. dearborn. at the gym is in session today, but they won't be having gym because we're here voting. this is wayne county, michiganama won the 40th precinct in 2012, and if you swing to the other side, this is the 41st precinct that votes on this side. mitt romney in 2012 took that side. we're on the west side of dearborn. everybody knows dearborn is the city with the largest arab american population in the united states. that's really the east side. there's a dividing line of a freeway. this side is different, varieties of immigrant communities mainly from europe. it's a very balanced sort of city. to give you a sense of the people we have spoken to, a lot of focus on economy, economy and jobs. also education. even though we're not in detroit, we talked to voters concern about detroit schools and the flint water crisis. those are some of the issues people are talking about. in local media, lots and lots and lots of ads running for hillary clinton. bernie sanders, we have seen some anti-trump ads on local news here. but a lot of people, i think, waiting to see if the issue of the bailout winds up being decisive in

in michigan really do make a major distinction between the auto industry and, you know, some of these other big banks that help contribute to the recession, and i spoke with some people at the dearborn rally for bernie sanders who, while they're still with bernie sanders, also say, hey, the auto industry helps my family make it into the middle class, and that's how we view these big companies. so i think you're seeing sanders trying to make sure he makes that point. because he didn't make the point on stage last night that he had voted in favor of that stand-alone auto bailout bill which, of course, went on to fail, and that money for the auto industry was part of the second round of funding from the troubled relief program that bailed out the big bang. i think they're trying to make sure that's clear. sanders is also trying to clear up some comments that he made about african-americans and race. african-american voters very important here in the state of michigan, and his campaign knows they have to make inroads in that if they're going to perform the way they do. he was, of course, asked about where he said some african-americans -- that some white voters don't understand what it
