i want to bring in deb feyerick out of our new york bureau who's been following this developing story. deb, what can you add? >> reporter: what we do know is we know that nursing supervisors at a local hospital, columbia st. mary's hospital, they are on standby. they're waiting for what they believe are victims to arrive. we're hearing as many as 8 to 20 victims, but there's no word on the severity of the injuries. the police department right now not commenting until they see how this all plays out. we do know that there are a number of cruisers in the area. the s.w.a.t. team there as well. they're redirecting traffic away from that sikh temple which is what appears to be a very main highway in oak creek. the sikh temple is on howell avenue. it's a large facility. it's a relatively new facility built about five years ago. an affiliate of ours, wtmj who's bringing us those aerials said that at least they had seen one person in the parking lot. others crouched behind police cars. but then as we were listening to the feed coming in, the helicopter did pull back. but you can see there are

deb feyerick in new york. what can you tell us at this point? >> well, don and rob, the police chief has described the situation as very fluid and they don't know the actual victim count. they don't even know how many suspects, how many gunmen may have been involved in this. they do know that calls came in, 911 calls came in, about 10:20 and an officer responding to the scene actually encountered the gunman, and in their words, put him down. he is 1 of 3 people who was shot outside of that sikh temple. four people were also shot inside that temple and killed. these are four people shot and killed inside, three people shot an kill outside, including the gunman. tactical units inside the building right now going through the building, attending victims as they sort of move forward, as they do their sweep. and we've got chris voss is on the phone, he's an fbi negotiator -- former hostage negotiator. chris, we're told multiple units, multiple s.w.a.t. teams from different sheriff's and police departments are there. what is going on inside that buildi

with that i want to bring in deb feyerick in new york who is about to speak with an fbi hostage negotiator? >> thanks, rob. and what we do know is one shooter, maybe more, inside the building. witnesses describe the man as white male, heavy build, bald, sleeveless t-shirt, a second shooter possibly also inside the building. joining me right now is chris voss, a former fbi hostage negotiator. chris, can you hear me? >> i can hear you, deb. >> so chris, let's talk about this. right now everything is unfolding. we are hearing that there are four but maybe as many as 30 people shot inside that building. when you've got two people who are inside, children, others as hostages, how do you -- how do you analyze the situation taking place? >> well, there has been enough time that's gone by that possibly it's evolved away from the shooter that the shooter didn't actually expect, and he's trying to decide what to do next. what the police are trying to do on the outside is try to bring some stabilization to the situation by showing that they've got it contained and then to try to make contact as early

deb feyerick has been getting information about what's going on.as a bit of a timeline, too, and to talk about the people who were there and what are you hearing from the people, witnesses and people, family members who are at this temple. >> this is what i can tell you right now. what appears to have happened is about 10:25 the first 911 calls started coming in to the police department. a police officer, heroic police officer, responded as people inside that temple taking cover, hiding, texting, calling, trying to get people to that building to help them. well, it appears that when an officer arrived on the scene, a 20-year hadn't veter 20-year-veteran, the shooter was outside the building and he engaged fire. veteran of the police department started shooting at the gunman. the gunman fired back. it appears the gunman hit the officer multiple times but the officer struck and kill, it appears, the gunman. that gunman, we are told, is presumed to be dead. according to authorities, four people were shot and killed inside that building. you can imagin

deb feyerick is on that story. she joins us here from new york. deb, this is incredibly disturbing.are police telling you? >> here's what's so interesting. they may have stopped something that was about to happen for the very fact they were simply paying attention. here's what we know. 37-year-old scott smith walked into a movie theater near cleveland, a town called west lake. he arrived 30 minutes before the movie was supposed to start. he was the first person in the theater. now, instead of going to the front of the theater he took a seat in the very back in the center right in the middle, a wall behind him. police lieutenant who i spoke to said that position was actually quite tactical. raised the red flag for the manager and also for an off duty police officer who was doing security at the movie theater. the lieutenant tells me that they approached the man. he had a bag with him. that also raced suspicions. when they asked to look inside his bag, what they found was a .9 millimeter semiautomatic handgun, two loaded magazines and three knives. they also found a fourth knife that

cnn's deborah feyerick has been working her sources and has more for us now from new york. deb, what are you learning new? >> first of all, we want to update you on the condition of the three people who were critically wounded. three people had been rushed to a nearby trauma center just moments after the shooting occurred. they were suffering -- one of them was suffering gunshot wounds to the abdomen and chest. another to the face and other extremities. one to the neck. we are told that two of those men are now out of surgery. they are recovering. a third, however, still on that table undergoing what doctors are calling a complex procedure. we don't know what specifically that means. all we can say is two are out of surgery. one is still essentially undergoing this procedure and presumably still struggling to make it through. we can tell you about the search that's going on in the gunman's home. authorities try to uncover what evidence they can as to the motive. fbi saying they don't have a motive yet. so while they're considering that it's potentially domestic terrorism, they

deborah feyerick is joining us with the latest. what's going on here, deb?ng, police in ohio believe they may have averted a massacre similar to the one in aurora, colorado. scott a. smith is facing charges. police say saturday night he went to the regal theater to see the 10:30 p.m. showing of the new batman movie, the same one as the colorado shooter. smith arrived about 30 minutes early. he was the first one in the theater. he took his seat in the back row directly in the middle with his back to a wall. a manager and offduty police officer got suspicious not only because of where he was sitting but also because smith was carrying a bag that didn't look quite right. you can see a picture of it right there. so they asked to search. and inside they found a loaded .9-millimeter semiautomatic handgun, two loaded clips, three knives and was carrying a fourth knife on him. he told the offduty officer that he was carrying the knives for protection to protect himself and other movie goers. the offduty cop did not buy it, took him into custody and then searched his
