i want to get to deb feyerick. she's been reporting from long island which was hit in a major way by this storm. deb, tell me about where you are and what you're seeing this morning. >> reporter: i can't see you. soledad, let me tell you what we're seeing here. this is the street where our colleague last night was standing an it was really almost waist high. now the water has receded. but the area where we're standing you have inlets basically. we expect that at high tide this will all come in. what we can tell you, the smell of gasoline and a fire is very strong right now in this particular area. a number of house fires happened overnight and firefighters working to put those out. it's an incredible almost dichotomy. you have fires, you have floods, all of it happening at the same time with resources stretched to the very max. the evacuation centers were up and running. there were folks from the national grid, the power center who were there with us. a number of families who left as soon as the power went out in th

be having search and rescue teams just to make sure that nobody's unaccounted for, soledad. >> deb feyerick us in breezy point, queens. looks just so eerie behind you, deb. just awful. >> it really does. >> want to get right to mike long, he lost his home in that very fire. he's the chairman of new york's conservative party joining us by phone. i have to say mr. long, really, the pictures are just so devastating. i'm showing pictures of the actual fire when it was under way, burning out of control, firefighters couldn't even get close because of all the water that was in the area. i was stunned to hear that nobody died in this fire. i mean, there's a glimmer of good news, it's that. >> well, if there's anything like i've had my home, as many other people did, we had our homes for 35 years, fond memories, great place to raise a family and have summer fun, but the most paimportant part there was no fat talties which is really amazing. i'm sort of blessed, people there, get them all out. many of them listened, not everybody, but many of them listened and evacuated when the community asked ever

our cnn's deb feyerick is there in the breezy point neighborhood. some of the pictures we're seeing from overnight just such a sad story. most importantly though, deb, do we know that everybody got out alive? >> reporter: yeah, ashleigh, we're having a little trouble hearing you. i know you're talking to us here at breezy point. right now let me just bring you up to date a little bit because it looks like some of the reinforcements have arrived. members of the national guard who are here, some ambulances, firefighters are on scene, the nypd's emergency services units also now. they're sending divers just to scour some of the homes closest to the water to see if anybody is inside and just to sort of assess the damage. a lot of people have arrived really within the last 45 minutes to an hour. as you see this wind and this rain that's just kicked up, this is what's so crazy about it. you almost feel like this superstorm just keeps kicking and kicking and kicking. i don't know if we have enough cord, you can see boats, they're planning on putting some bo

deb feyerick is still out there tonight. and deb, i know it is a chaotic scene.hank you tell us what's happening right now? >> reporter: yeah, well, you know what's interesting? think about it, erin. 24 hours ago, that's the point when that huge seven to ten-food wave slammed into this part of breezy point. we are now learning, according to the nypd that a police officer did die in this area. details right now coming in. so we're trying to get additional details. but think about it. 24 hours ago, all of these homes, they were standing. this is the car, the heat, the intensity, extraordinary. now we can see a couple of chimneys. we can see the foundations of buildings. and, again, these burned-out vehicles. it is so dark, erin, right now. and that's because all of the electricity in this entire area is out. they don't know what started the fire yet, whether it was a transformer that simply blew starting this blaze, or whether, in fact, it was some of the power lines, can't even make out the power lines at this hour of the night, or i should say in this darkness, w

deb feyerick was talking about the new york city area. the darker the color the higher number of people without power. new york you move down to the state of new jersey, incredibly hard hit along the shoreline. we know new york and new jersey likely to go democratic. let's walk over to the state of pennsylvania and look at this, you see this down here, let me help you understand this chart a little bit. i'm going to pop it out and this explains the darker the color the higher the number of people without power so as we come back to the state of pennsylvania i want to show you something. if you look it's obvious to the naked eye in this area here is where you see more people without power, scranton a lentown, reading, down here in philadelphia and the suburbs, about 100,000, maybe a little more than that out of power in philadelphia and month dpgomery bucks county alone. let's look at how they voted in the last election. if the problems persist right there that tells you more of a problem for the president and if there's no power at pollin

going to get first to deb feyerick as we mentioned, she's in lindenhurst, long island. yesterday was water was in some cases waist high. how's it looking there this morning, deb? >> reporter: you know, it's looking better. a lot of the water receding but, again, full moon, waiting for high tide. so it's yet to be determined as to what will happen once daylight comes. we can tell you, the smell of gasoline very, very strong. a number of homes in this area beened to the ground. you have this dichotomy between floods and fires and people trying to fight both, trying to figure out what's going on. a police officer walked this up road, just a short time ago, he was going to work. he said all the homes at the end of this block are about three feet of water saturating the entire area. you can see some of the boats that are here in this boat yard, they are now in the water as well. again, it's one of those situations that's so fluid, strong winds still, not a lot of rain. but, again, with so many people who have been mobilized, we spoke to one official earlier who said sources

deborah feyerick is there for us. deb, it's a pretty awful situation down there.it's just been razed almost to the ground. i've seen pictures earlier. they were saying 80 homes but i believe it's nearer 100, is that right? >> reporter: yeah, it really is. we spoke to a fire department official earlier this afternoon. he actually, his father has a home here and he did the math and said you know, you've got about seven blocks, 30 homes per block, and his math, he said conservatively it's probably more than 100. so they are really trying to figure out how many homes were devastated. piers, you've got to think about this. they expected the flood, they expected the high water, they expected the power surge. they never expected this fire. o'and we just want to show you something, piers. take a look inside. this is the car. think about the intensity of the heat to that blaze to do that to that car. as we were walking around, everything is just obliterated. it is incinerated. we see a couple foundations, we see a couple of metal objects but for the most part, clothing, fu

deborah feyerick is there. deb, very quickly, if you can tell us how this happened in the first place and what are people doing today? >> i understand -- >> reporter: we're having a bit of trouble hearing you. hope you can hear us. we are joined by t.j. gillmartin. you came to check on your brother's house. tell us what you're seeing. >> total destruction. 100%, 110% destruction, everything. >> reporter: what does it look like when walking? >> nothing. there's one cluster of homes, every house along the side that's still up is damaged. everyone off the foundations. windows, houses sitting this way. >> reporter: when you heard that the damage was going to be severe here, did you have any expectation of what was going to come? >> no. as i was walking back there, nice house, good house, could be fine. got to his block and one cluster of three blocks destroyed. every -- i mean nothing, nothing left. even the sidewalk is ripped up. >> reporter: the firefighters trying to fight the fires. you're a first responder ground

feyerick is there. what are you finding out, deb? >> reporter: carol? >> i'm here.eb. >> reporter: carol, yeah, thanks, carol. we're having a little problem. the weather out here is -- sort of gusts of rain to the sun goming out. we want to pan down, you see a fire truck, a vehicle there. you mentioned 80 homes. we're told gotham watch is on fire and the problem is, first of all, these homes are -- they're old homes, most of them are wooden structures. they're side by side. just a little sidewalk between the two homes -- water onto those fires. so they're really stuck. there's just nothing that they can do. we spoke to somebody who is kind of like the mayor here of breezy point. he told us probably about -- evacuated. we took a walk down along the bay, carol. i have to tell you, it looks like this storm took a massive sledgehammer and just started whacking at the individual homes. windows completely blown out. some of the homes are simply knocked off of their foundations. others are sinking. water is rushing back out into the bay. it is just -- it is nothing like i

cnn's deborah feyerick is on the scene for us. deb that area where you are. tell our viewers what happened and what's going on now. >> reporter: you know, wolf, it looks like somebody dropped a bomb. this entire area here, completely incinerated. everyday objects are barely, you know, unrecognizable. this is a post. we think it may have been some sort of a swinging door, although it looks like it also could have been a lamp. the thing is, this car over here, for example, also caught fire. everybody was prepared for the floodwater. as a matter of fact, a number of the cars here got flooded. but what they weren't prepared for was the fire. and once that one fire, once that one home caught fire, what ended up happening, you saw almost like a peach shape, the wind going in a particular direction, and all the rest of these homes simply ignited, and because they're so close together, they just burned one after the next after the next, and you've got just a couple of feet in between the different homes. so they're so close. there was basical
