joining me now is florida congresswoman debbie powell of florida who is running to replace rick scott in the senate. congresswoman, was this ruling as big an earthquake to you as it feels like it is to me? >> yeah, so you know, i have been here in florida now for months, traveling across the state, and i have seen the energy and the grassroots movement that has been organized by this group that gathered more than a million signatures be able to put this ballot initiatives in november. so i'm actually not surprised because we saw across the board, whether republicans, democrats, or independents who signed on to this ballot initiative, they want to make their own decisions of what is best for their bodies and their lives. not politicians. and we have this independent streak here in florida, joy ann, which means we don't want any government interference. now, i'm extremely concerned on this six-week abortion ban, one of the most extreme bans on abortion, when most women don't know they're pregnant. it's going to really put a lot of lives in danger. it's -- we're going to see a spike in m

debbie powell is a democratic congress woman running for senate against florida republican rick scott. it is nice to have you here. >> good evening, chris, thank you for having me. >> for the folks in your state you are running to represent statewide in the u.s. senate, what does it mean to be that the florida supreme court has upheld this six week fan ? >> it will be dangerous for tens of thousands of women. this is a total ban on abortion without any exceptions to and benjamin netanyahu, a banner rick scott said he would have supported and signed into law if he was governor. we know florida was the last state to offer reproductive care in the southeast region. i'm concerned as a mom for the safety of young women across the state. i'm concerned about the rise in maternal mortality rate, which we know is affecting black women and latina women at high rates. what we also know, though, is that we are going to have an opportunity in november to make sure that we protect reproductive freedoms in the state and we are going to win. rick scott knows it, the millions of audience website onto

we have debbie powell and asked her how important she thinks abortion will be to floridian voters this make sure they protect their right to choose and their freedom. >> reporter: remember, floridian democrats have had a problem with voter turnout for some time. democrats are really struggling and fighting to keep florida purple. quickly, i really want to explain the legal impact of deciding whether or not abortion will be on the ballot. there is a separate supreme court decision we are waiting for in florida that decides whether or not the current 15-week abortion ban is constitutional. if they separately decide so, that would trigger a six-week abortion ban 30 days later. it is entirely possible that we could see a six-week abortion ban in florida that if today we learn abortion could be on the november ballot, 60% or more voters, if they decide to pass this, we could see a six-week abortion ban overturned by voters in november, but if and only if the supreme court decides abortion can be on the ballot in november. it remains to be seen, but there's a lot on the line. >> thank you ve
