congresswoman debbie wasserman shultz is in florida lauderdale this morning. reince preibus is in hot springs california. let's get right to the news. unemployment among african- americans, of course, is is now nearly 17%. that has caused african-american leaders to complain and complain loudly that the president is is not doing enough to change it. well last night at a big dinner here in washington sponsored by the congressional black caucus, the president responded. did he ever! here's part of what he said. >> i don't have time to feel sorry for myself. i don't have time to complain. i'm going to press on. i expect all of you to march with me and press on. take off your bedroom slippers. put on your marching shoes. shake it off. stop complaining. stop grumbling. stop crying. we are going to press on. we've got work to do. >> schieffer: so debbie wasserman shultz i have to ask you just flatly was that good politics? how is that going to shore up his african-american base and i guess the other part, is that going to help to get independent voters in the democr

florida congresswoman debbie wasserman shultz joins me now. what can the president do to fix that? it's important to note that it's september in the year before the election. polls don't really mean very much and as the -- as plflorida voters get to know both sides of the aisle, it will be clear that every single republican has embraced the tea party and their extre extremism and in florida, that is not a position that is normally embraced by our voters. i would expect between his commitment to creating jobs and continuing to turn the economy around and the fact that president obama supports making sure we can shore up social security and medicare as opposed to ending it, that he will be very competitive from florida. and i think we'll be successful in putting it in the win column again in 2012. >> the republicans, principlely mitt romney and perry, are going after the president's support or lack of support for israel. that said, the president's white house staff gave prime minister netanyahu the president's u.n. speech in advance and solicited his vote of approval, him going publi

what do you think of what debbie wasserman-shultz just said?> i think she made a point about the 30-year-old being allowed to die with no health insurance. my sense is the exchange will get some comment out there, anderson, because what i find so interesting is that people in this hall really did groove on much of what they heard. this is what they wanted to hear from these candidates. there are a lot of people around the country just like the folks in this room. there are a huge number of people who i think were horrified by what they heard in this room. i was getting notes about, they ought to lock these people up and not let them out. don't let them do anything to the country. this race is increasingly bringing to light and once again how divided and splintered we are and how hard it's going to be for anybody to govern when this is over. >> newt gingrich is the one who got the most zingers in at the president. i want to play something else he had to say. >> i think the time to raise the tax on working americans in the middle of the obama dep
