caller: yes, miss deborah.i'd like to ask you, could you list some of the other things that we use around our household that is made from petroleum, please? guest: that's an excellent question. just like we have -- the hope is that when you produce something, you use every bit of it. you know, that's the goal of the production process. if an engineer does a good job, they have. there's no weight. so everything in our lives is right for petroleum. that isn't to say we can't devise new ways. plastic, all the greases and oils and things that lubricate, all of the systems that we use are based in oil. what's interesting is a lot of that goes the way of electricity because they aren't moving parts of electricity so if you would electrify more and more cars, then a lot of the oils that are used for motor only, a lot of those would end up not being needed. but it's just like ethanol, as a good example. we have agricultural policies to produce corn. then we went to corn for fuel, which wasn't, i think, a very good idea

host: new york, o last phone call for deborah gordon. caller: hi there. i'm a little frustrated, too, about where we go with our alternative fuels. the one thing nobody ever looks at is hemp. it can be used for a number of different reasons, especially as a biofuel. they made a mercedes i think in 1980's that could drive -- around 50 cities in north america, powered solely by 600 gallons of hemp biodiesel. why aren't we ever talking about hemp as a alternative fuel. it's not marijuana, so i don't understand why we never go there. guest: i think biofuels, there are so many options for biofuels. i don't think it's a silver bullet, but i think it's a great transition fume because it's liquid. and that's the system that we're on now so we should look at all different otions for biofuels. but we really also need to look at the consequences of biofuels. there were issues about corn ethanol with land. you don't want to remove food production to get fuel production. so i would say that host: thank you for being here. we appreciate the conversation. >> we will go

i travel a lot with my wife, deborah. one of the things she sees routinely is the stress on the families. certainly, sometimes that a very similar to pds are being experienced -- pts adjust by spouses but also by children. if i were a 10 year old son or daughter and my father and mother went off to war and i am coming up on my fifth major deployment, you almost cannot do the math and find any time at home. the family has been in many ways holding it in, working to support, meeting the challenges in ways that we never imagined. there has been a resilience shown on part of our military as well as our family. there are huge needs that we have. both for those in the military and those in transition. we are working much more closely with the v a then we used to work. i think that is important. possible leave that to the department of defense, the va, and the communities throughout the country have to figure out a way to work together to meet the needs that are there. probably more importantly to take advantage of the resources

deborah and i meet regularly with the young troops and their spouses and though proud of the difference they know they are making, quite frankly many of them are worried about their future, their livelihood, their children. so you will see in this budget increases for family supported advocacy programs and you will see used in warfighter and family services to include counseling, military spouse employment and care for our wounded, ill and injured. we are also pushing to dramatically increase the number of mental health nationals on staff and advance our research and dramatic rain injury and post-traumatic stress. we know the strain of frequent deployment causes many problems but we don't know yet fully nor understand fully how or to what extent. so even as we work hard to increase dwell time, time at home aided in part by the additional temporary and strength you approved last year for the army, we will work equally hard to decrease modern military service. indeed i believe over time, when these wars are behind us, we will need to look closely at the competing fiscal pressures that wil
