our deborah feyerick was in the courtroom for the sentencing of faisal shahzad, and deb, good to see you. how did this play out in court this morning? >> well, it was very interesting. you would have expected somebody to be quite almost subdued in front of the judge. but faisal shahzad, the would-be times square bomber was very defia defiant, giving a political statement for about five minutes, even interrupting the judge during the sentencing. he said during his statement, "brace yourself, the war with muslims has just begun." he then said the past nine years has achieved nothing for the u.s., we are only muslims defending our people and our land. if that means we are terrorists, we will terrorize you. so really almost threatening as to what was to come. as the judge read out his sentence, he said "i'm happy with the deal god has given me." she gave him the maximum time to which he pleaded guilty. he will be serving life in prison. the judge said the defendant had repeatedly failed to show any remor remorse. that when he swore to defend americans when he became a naturalized citizen

deborah feyerick is joining us, and she has details. deb?rthouse is being watched closely by members of the obama administration. they are arguing that federal court is the right place to try enemy combatants held at guantanamo bay, but others are arguing that military tribunals are the way to go. >> reporter: surrounded by the team of lawyers, auk mhmed ghai is the detainee, and this is the case that will be for all other detainees to follow. the judge said that the prosecutor could not call a key witness, because he says that he used key components for a bomb in tanzania. ghailani praises the judge's ruling. >> this is what the rock of the nation rests. we could not agree more with the courts. this case will be relied on by lawful evidence and not torture. >> this is referring to the time when he was in guantanamo and in cia custody and prosecutors say they are staying away from information learned in so-called forced interrogation, and the exception is one witness that the u.s. agents would have likely found the others without that eviden

deborah feyerick has the report. did he show any remorse, deb? >> none.the attempt to kill dozens of people with a car bomb in time's square saying that muslims have a right to defend themselves and their lands and as the judge sentenced him to spend the rest of his life in prison, he said in air ric -- arabic that god is great. >> he is no longer a threat, and the ongoing important challenge for all of us is to get the next shahzad before he does real harm. >> and he showed no remorse and give ten chance he would likely do that again and contrary to the oath he took in the citizen last year, he said his desire is not to defend americans, but to kill them. he came prepared with what amounted to a political statement warning quote, brace yourself because the war with muslims has just begun. he urged the court to embrace islam and become muslim and saying that the defeat is imminent, and he was handcuffed and led away and the judge said quote, i hope he will spend time in prison thinking whether the koran wants you to kill people, and rather than shy away,
