i'm deborah feyerick in for frederica whitfield. >>> a sad day in football. as we speak the kansas city chiefs are playing their nfl game despite the tragic loss of a team member, linebacker jovan belcher shot his girlfriend yesterday, then drove to the team practice facility and killed himself, pulling the trigger while his coach and general manager watched in disbelief. belcher and his girlfriend recently celebrated the birth of their 3-month-old daughter. casey wian, what are investigators learning about why apparently belcher did this? >> reporter: police are telling us at this hour there was some sort of an argument in the hours before the shooting of kasandra perfect kikin perkins, early saturday morning. neighbors said they never heard the couple fighting. they've been living together in the neighborhood for about a year, seemed to be getting along fine. both very happy after the birth of their daughter three months ago on september 11. i spoke with belcher's agent who also happens to be the agent for chiefs head coach romeo crennel and who witnessed t

wolf. >> deborah feyerick, thanks very much. people across the nation have become fascinated by the stories of the 20 children, the 6 women, all educators, who died at the school, and they're reaching out to newtown, sending gifts for the makeshift memorials that are springing up all over this town. cnn's brook baldwin is here. she caught up with a first responder delivering christmas wreaths from oregon. as brook discovered, has quite a story to tell us. brook, the story is powerful. it's a symptom, a symbol of what has going on here. you and i have walked around this town. people just want to show some emotion. >> it's pretty incredible. it's been difficult to talk to some of the first responders. you can see it in their eyes what they saw but they don't exactly want to share it and we're respecting it. i happened upon the town square where i see box after box and i said, what are you delivering, hanging up, and it was a wreath, 26 wreaths from a perfect stranger, a wreath from across the country in portland, oregon. here's wh

we're joined by deborah feyerick. deb, what are you learning?er: >> reporter: you know, it really goes to the heart of the investigation investigators were here for about an hour, hour and a half. they continue to gather evidence and follow leads. the medical examiner today told us that in fact nancy lanza was shot in her bed as she slept four times in the head by her son. the computer that was recovered by investigators, it was can completely smashed. the hard drive shattered. therefore, investigators are having a hard time retrieving information from that computer. and so the investigator, the only person that can could have potentially testified what was going on in her son's mind, nancy lanz za was shot and killed. you lost a key piece of evidence and witness as to what may have been going on. the bodies of the alleged gunman and his mom, they are not being released just yet. they have not been picked up and the family says that they are not going to be picked up until they are -- they are not going to be informed about that until the bodies

deborah feyerick is in newtown today.community still. >> reporter: it's a very, very difficult time, and everybody is still very much in mourning. wherever you go in this town, you can see signs of what has taken place not just in the center where you see the memorials but elsewhere. when you go and get a coffee, there are people dressed in mourning clothes coming from a funeral. when you drive the streets, you can see police cars that have been positioned in front of homes. four people today are buried, one of them the teacher lauren rosseau and her family is saying good buy. also three stints, allison wyatt, benjamin wheeler and katherine hubbard. they'll all be laid to rest today. they're roughly the same age as the gunman when he moved here and when he began his career at sandy hook lelementary school. there's a direct connection there. those children, however, everybody everywhere you go everyone is on the verge of tears. it will take a long time until everyone here gets over what has happened, if, in fact, that's ev

deborah feyerick, thank you so much, deborah. >>> other news we're following right now, including thenton. we're now told she is planning to testify before congress in mid-january about the attack on the united states diplomatic mission in benghazi, libya. she canceled an appearance tomorrow because she's been ill. she fainted and suffered a concussion. she's recuperating right now. three state department officials have resigned after a scathing new review of the benghazi attack. senior officials tell cnn, two of those who stepped down oversaw security decisions at the diplomatic mission. our pentagon correspondent, chris lawrence, is joining us now with more on this new report. a very tough report. the secrets it reveals. what's in this report, chris? >> well, wolf, we now know that the state department officials knew that radical islamic groups are operating around benghazi and that there'd been a spike in attacks on western targets. they were getting almost no help from the libyan government in helping to secure that mission. so they were relying on some militia members to help gua

i want to bring in deborah feyerick in newtown.eb, we've been learning more things about the gunman in the days prior, adam lanza, leading up to this massacre. what do we know about specifically some computers that were smashed, things that investigators are looking at to try to come up with some clues or some answers? >> reporter: you know, it is so important for investigators to try to piece together everything that happened in the days leading up to the crime. what we do want to do is show you the home. this is where the tragedy took place. it is still considered a crime scene. you can see it's surrounded by crime tape. investigators, the police, will hold on to this home until they've gone through it with a fine-tooth comb. we do know that firearms were a large part of nancy lanza's life. she's described as a country girl, a gun enthusiast who really liked to shoot. we are told by the atf, the alcohol, tobacco, firearms bureau, they're the ones to handle the guns, the weapons, the firearms. that, in fact, adam lanza and his mom

i'm deborah feyerick in for fredricka whitfield. tragedy strikes the nfl today.r jovan belcher has apparently committed suicide after allegedly killing his girlfriend. >> a little before 8:00 this morning, we got a call in regard to a shooting of a resident. when we arrived, a lady came out and said her daughter had been shot by her boyfriend several times inside the residence. she was taken to the local hospital where she died a short time later. about ten minutes after that, we got a call at arrowhead stadium to their practice facility in regard to a person in their parking lot armed with a hand gun. when the officer s were pulled up, they observed a black male with a gun to his head talking to a couple coaches in the parking lot. as the officers pulled up, that's when they heard the gun shot. >> joining us by phone from phoenix, mark mcmillian. tough day. what went through your mind when you heard this tragic news? >> shock. just utter shock, like you said, earlier this year, we lost junior seau to something like this. lost a good friend of mine, andre waters,

deborah feyerick is following that part of the investigation. she's live as well. what's the new information that you are getting? specifically from the medical examiner? >> reporter: >> reporter: just a couple of minutes ago, another investigator drove up the long driveway to get back into the thousand search for more evidence. but the medical examiner, h. cosby, toxicology tests were done on adam lanza. they're trying to determine the kind of medications that he may have been on and the effects of those medications also for the first time, officially, the medical examiner saying that adam lanza did have as berger's but that's what he's being told but taking it one step further to find out if that was the correct diagnosis, whether or not there was more going on inside this young man. the bodies of the mom and the alleged gunman, adam lanza, both of them, have undergone autopsies. they have not been released. nobody has claimed bodies yet. nobody will be notified when they are until after the burials. that is at the request of the family. a couple more gruesome de

i'm deborah feyerick live from cnn's world headquarters in atlanta. and as i speak, in deal yet on the fiscal cliff, but a big but, it appears lawmakers may be getting just a bit closer. >> and i'm joe johns live from washington where just moments ago the president encouraged lawmakers to cross the finish line. it was a compromise u.s. lawmakers signed into law in 2011 that contributed to the pending man made catastrophe that they have been warning about for more than a year. now, as the new year's deadline approaches, the fiscal cliff may be moving to a later date, in 2013. it is part of a possible deal that is forming at this hour. this, of course, represents the $3.6 trillion the u.s. government spent last year, unless congress reaches a deal when the new year hits. so too will the fiscal cliff. $600 billion worth of tax increases and spending cuts. it is supposed to be automatic. but now republicans are suggesting a delay, the president just spoke trying to add pressure to congress to avoid going over the fiscal cliff. listen. >> my preference wou
