deborah passed away , her husband partitioned the government for a spousal benefit. impact he got that. he was dead by the time they granted it to him. it is quite a story. she served as robert shurtleff. another is dr. mary walker. she was a surgeon, trained in new york. the army was crying for surgeons to come and help take care of the sick and wounded during the civil war. she presented herself. they don't want her , why do you think u because she is a woman. she volunteered her services for some time. finally, she was, they did hire her as a contract surgeon. she served in tennessee. she was taken prisoner by the confederate forces and held for four months down in richmond. she was released in an exchange, prisoner exchange with confederate forces. she was exchanged for a lieutenant colonel. when she served, she was equivalent to a lieutenant or captain. she was contract, not in the military itself. she was awarded the congressional medal of honor by the president for her services. in fact, several years later, the army determined that there were over 900 people that received the congressional medal of honor that really didn't meet the criteria for the award of the metal
