our debra alfarone is live on the scene now. what can you tell us? >> reporter: the scene is a very active one, jan. you can see behind me many police cars and moments ago we saw them leave. they basically left and started chasing what we thought was the suspect involved in this. let's show you that video. [ sirens ] >> reporter: lights and sirens going they left university boulevard here. that's montgomery county police chasing a car down university boulevard. they say around 9:30 tonight two men were shot. they say that the victims had invited the suspect into their home. everyone knew each other and they got into an argument. that's when the bullets started flying. we checked with police just a little while ago and they don't have updated information on one of the suspects, but they do believe that one of them doesn't have life threatening injuries. that person will be fine. they're still going to get more information on the other one, but still a very active scene behind me, this information just coming in as we're working this story out here. we

debra: i had grown up in southwestern virginia. the civil war was everywhere. my great-grandfather was a veteran. it is omnipresent. i'm certainly familiar with the civil war stories. i grew up in the hometown of jeb , the confederate cavalry commander. my favorite movie growing up was "the santa fe trail," where errol flynn played jeb stuart. where i am from the south and you like dead people, i got to know the town to pick up to the cemetery. it is the oldest cemetery around. i came to walk around and i tripped over the grave of cyprus holiday. the man in the mist all caps together. i realize the character from the were "the santa fe trail" real. it really was holy ground. that is when my fascination with the role of kansas and civil war began. kansas did not earn the name what he kansas by accident. when the kansas-nebraska act was signed in 1854, the very act of just signing that piece of paper was viewed by missouri as an act of war. from the very beginning, every colony, all those original colonies assumed what was to the west of them was theirs. virginia

i'm debra alfarone. >>> less than two weeks out from pope francis' historic first trip to the united states word that the u.s. has thwarted some kind of plot targeting the pontiff. the chairman of the house homeland security committee made that disclosure this morning after receiving a classified secret service briefing. garrett haake has the latest on the pope and the city as they prepare for one of his many public appearances one week from thursday. >> the pope's six-day visit to the united states will include multiple public appearances in open settings, something security experts say is part of what makes him so difficult to protect and why intelligence that allows us to disrupt plots against him is so important. nine days out from the visit to d.c. one potential threat against pope francis identified and disrupted. >> we are monitoring very closely threats against the pope as he comes into the united states. we have disrupted one particular case in particular, but as that date approaches i think we're all very vigilant to protect him as he comes into the united states. >> report

debra alfarone joins us live from the newsroom with more on where this money will go and how it will be used. >> well, lesli, the state of virginia will be getting more than 1 million of those $80 million. the state will use that cash to test more than 2,000 previously untested rape kits representing more than 2,000 victims who may see some justice and that makes all of us safer. virginia's 2,000 plus kits are just a fraction, a little more than half the almost $80 million comes straight from the new york district attorney's office that will be used to test more than 56,000 kits across the country. the justice department comes through with the rest and it goes to test more than 13,000 more kits plus look into why kits often remain untested and make sure new kits are tested right away in the future. wusa9 got an inside look at testing inside bodi's cell mark forensics of lorton, virginia last year. they will do all the testing for those 56,000 plus kits. new york prosecutor cy vance, vice president joe biden, attorney general lore rhett lynch and margarita marguerite hargitay spoke to
