veteran but in major magazine before that trying to show the prowess of a car that was driving from deerborn, michigan to daytona beach from north to south. we need symbols to signify north and south. how about a u.s. flag and confederate flag. not the stars and bars or the national flag but a battle flag of some description. what that tells me is that by 1900, this flag, its meanings and what i meant to emphasize earlier, i ran over the notes here, that one of the principles of my talk to you today is about tracing the pattern of this flag's history. you have to trace its entire history. the meaning has evolved over time. there hasn't been one meaning replacing another. it's new levels of meaning. the meaning derive from the use. use leads to perception which leads to meaning. so we need to look at the way the flag was used and how that affected the way people perceived it and, therefore, their perception of what it meant. so it went from being a flag of the confederate soldier so a flag of the confederacy. by the turn of the century, beyond the confederacy to a flag of the south, particula
