we begin with a live look at hi- def doppler. a strong pacific storm is zeroing in on the bay area this morning. and it's expected to cause a major mess. it is thursday, december 11. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. thanks for joining us on this thursday special edition of kpix 5 morning news. >> yes. the storm is here. we are live team coverage of what you need to know to be prepared and safe. anne makovec is keeping an eye on the situation in the north bay. kiet do is standing by at sfo with any cancellations. but we begin with roberta gonzales in the weather center. how's it looking? >> many people are saying what storm? you have not heard the raindrops on your rooftops as of yet but let's do it, let's fire up our hi-def doppler radar. green is the light precipitation. yellow indicates moderate precipitation. and the orange and purples, that's not good news. let's zero in on the north bay where the action is this morning. we have a combination of the light to moderate to heavy rainfall. check out 101

let's get to our hi-def doppler radar. and you'll notice the difference when looking at the radar, as well. yesterday everybody had rain at the same time. today, it's more hit and miss spotty showers but when you get hit, you get nailed with pockets of moderate to heavy rain as we are now seeing in throughout mill valley. we see shades of orange as the possibility of a thunderstorm develops. very hazardous travel in the area along 101, north or south. and then east of the bay orinda heavy downpours. this is occurring all on highway 24. bay bridge from san francisco, currently a break. the roads in the city of san francisco the streets of san francisco totally inundated at this hour with ponding. we are in the 50s, mild because of the subtropical moisture. today very windy, periods of heavy rain, temperatures in the 60s. still, that good threat of a thunderstorm throughout the day at any point of the day. we'll still see lingering showers throughout the evening forecast but they will taper off. thursday morning a shower. a

it's our hi-def doppler. check this out the difference between yesterday and now is that at this time, 24 hours ago, everybody was getting rained on all at once but now, we are seeing widespread scattered showers but some of these cells contain potentially moderate to heavy downpours. the north bay has been getting hammered all morning from novato into petaluma streaming around highway 12 into napa yountville and sonoma, vacaville you, too have some rain showers. vallejo, benicia, martinez, american canyon. the 580/680 is nasty on a normal day. now couple in heavy rain and it's messy this morning. we have moderate rainfall around antioch and discovery bay along highway 4. we will continue to see periods of moderate to heavy rainfall plus now you got to factor in the winds currently out of the southeast up to 31 in san jose of air temperatures in the 50s and low 60s. urban and small stream flood advisory in effect until 7:00 this morning for the ponding on the roads. highs today in the 60s with the rain contin

this is our hi-def doppler radar. good morning, everyone.you see lots of different shades of colors. again the green is light rain. the yellow is a more moderate precipitation falling. the orange is a heavy downpour. we have been picking up specks of purple, 1" of rain an hour and thunderstorms. that's a slight outside chance at this particular time. but boy, this storm is picking up a lot of real estate at this time. we are zipping toward the northern portion of the bay area that's been getting slammed, hammered since 3 a.m. we still see pockets of heavy downpours in between san rafael and mill valley so that's an awful morning commute along 101 if you are traversing into the city. and, in fact, golden gate bridge now with moderate downpours out over the bay waters as well into the richmond and sunset district even the mission district with lots of raindrops on the rooftops at this hour. this is a great view of this powerful pacific storm. now the core of the center of the area of low pressure very well defined. back here behind it see all

according our hi-def doppler radar it is still raining outside. we have had three storms in six days. today we have yet another disturbance rolling through the bay area so there will be 4 in 7 days. and we have a fifth system on friday. let's zoom in on some of the problematic areas right now. you see the shades of yellow and orange and even red. that's heavy precipitation in the santa clara valley 680 out every milpitas towards downtown san jose. then along lot coast, we have hit-and-miss showers after half moon bay to the south and all the way to san gregorio and then a moderate cell through the santa cruz mountains. woodside raindrops on the rooftops. a sound over the bay waters right now. a cell moving in towards sfo where so far we do not have any delays on arrivals or departures. temperatures in the 40s and 50s, calm winds and areas of fog being reported in throughout livermore. so pockets of dense fog out the door this morning. don't forget that umbrella. scattered showers throughout the day today. intensifying in the afternoon hours. and o

right now our hi-def doppler radar not picking up anything on the screen. all the precipitation is skirting across the northwest corner of the state of california. we see all those clouds. doesn't look like much. but the dynamics associated with that plume of subtropical moisture reaches back to the hawaiian islands, folks. >> whoa. >> that's how far back it is. so your impact for flooding will be high, also for wind damage it will be high. and the commute will be impacted. elizabeth will be all over that. >> we will. use mass transit if you can. we'll be promoting that a lot. in the meantime as roberta said the skies are clear, roads are dry. there was a backup half-hour ago on the bay bridge. they were running the traffic breaks overnight three right lanes blocked between treasure island and the fremont street exit. all lanes are back open. we are not seeing a big delay at the toll plaza. so yeah, all is clear so far coming into san francisco. we are seeing a lot of overnight roadwork still out there though. we'll break it down coming up. >> tomorrow you'

it's our hi-def doppler radar. you can see a little bit of return in the form of some light rain showers up the santa cruz mountains. currently we have temperatures in the 50s across the board. going up to a rainy day high today in the 50s even a few low 60s. the full forecast still straight ahead. >>> and checking the roads, we start off with a major traffic trouble spot. chp has issued a traffic alert for southbound 101 at south airport all lanes shut down at this point. they are taking traffic off at grant. it is very slow-and-go as you work your way towards the scene. if you are heading to the airport for an early flight, it will mess up your drive this morning so we'll update you and let you know when lanes re- open. >>> a strange glow in the sky over richmond catches the attention of people in the bay area. calls were coming into the newsroom asking what it is last night. we checked out our roof kamalas night. our station is about 20 miles away. and this is what we saw. it was coming from the chevron refinery

this is our hi-def doppler radar.ng rid of yesterday's storm and making room for storm number 2 entering the weather picture today. we'll track that storm together as the news continues. >>> and the wet roads causing some problems right now on 580. a lot of our drive times took longer than usual. it's brutal now through the altamont pass and livermore valley, you can see the slow traffic once you pass vasco. we'll check "kcbs traffic" coming up. >>> breaking news out of the south bay right now. lanes in both directions blocked on highway 17 near los gatos. kiet do reports. >> reporter: you know, this tree went down and it's about an hour and a half ago so it is blocking all lanes here on highway 17. we are literally standing on highway 17 itself at a chp roadblock. what we're seeing now this is southbound 17 and traffic is getting diverted at summit road. folks are having to turn around and go back the other way. northbound lanes are getting turned around at glenwood. at last report we heard they had about 100 cars st

it's hi-def doppler radar lots of different shades on there, let me explain it. green light rain. yellow, moderate rain. orange, heavy rain. when we see the areas of purple or even red, that could be one inch of rainfall per hour moving into the bay area or even a thunderstorm. we don't see any of that in the forecast as of right now. just an outside chance. but right now take a look at this right here. you have been been slammed this morning. very hazardous around 101 and 131. all this has been sliding into the city of san francisco. we now have the moderate rainfall from the richmond district through san francisco also the neighborhood of the mission district and sunset district. we now have all this traversing into the eastern portion of our bay area. raindrops on the rooftops around orinda through berkeley heading into the piedmont area, as well. and in west oakland. we are seeing a void of precipitation around east palo alto. we just saw light rain showers there but it appears it is if it's lifting towards redwood city, san carlos and sfo. big picture, big storm. this is the

right now let's look at our hi- def doppler radar. very light precipitation to the south of us. we could still see a stray shower today especially in the north. keep that umbrella handy. i would also grab the sunglasses for a little brief peek of sunshine under mostly cloudy skies. currently in the 50s across the board, we have some areas of fog trying to develop inland. today's high temperatures into the 50s and the 60s under a mostly cloudy sky. the winds will be out of the southwest 10 to 15 miles per hour. here's your extended forecast. we have an area of low pressure that will push into the bay area overnight through friday it will impact your morning commute tomorrow. high pressure builds in the bay area, mostly cloudy skies over the weekend. winter officially arrives on sunday and as it does so, it ushers in a dry weather pattern on monday through wednesday. here's gianna. >> let's check conditions on the bay area bridges. so far, so good. no accidents record as you work your way towards the bay bridge toll plaza. easy ride into san francisco. same goes for conditions at

let's go ahead and take a look at our hi-def doppler.king up a little bit of green, yellow and orange. that yellow is moderate downpour at this particular time. it streams over the san mateo bridge. it em compasses redwood city, palo alto and all this is sliding to the south. as we take a live look at city by the bay, the city of san francisco, the transamerica building, we do have some pockets of dense fog out the door this morning. numbers cooler than what they have been. in the 40s and 50s. but typically this time of the year santa rosa should be checking in around 36 degrees. so not bad. this is yesterday's cold front. now, behind it right there, can you see it? watch it develop right there. this is the next wave that's going to push into the bay area bringing us scattered showers throughout the day but most notably during the afternoon hours and into the evening commute as well as around 8:00 and 9:00 tonight. 50s and 60s today your daytime high meanwhile lingering showers today dry day thursday. a new storm on friday. but it sets t

roberta, are you ready with hi- def doppler? >>> i am so ready. our hi-def doppler and at this particular time we're not picking up any kind of rain in and around the vicinity. take a look right now. it is dry and this is actually what it looks like the calm before the storm. we have to go upstream where you find the plume of moisture scattering some precipitation right there right now just offshore from the northwestern corner of the state of california. we do have a high wind warning in advance of this area of low pressure heading this way. we can expect the winds to increase this afternoon out of the southeast 10 to 20 miles per hour. damaging winds are likely. we will see gusts in the highest elevations in excess of 70 miles per hour at sea level right around 35 miles per hour. we have a flash flood watch in effect for the entire bay area. we will see flooding on local roadways and sidewalks. and we have a high surf advisory in effect along the coast into the north bay. right now, dense fog out the door in some inland pockets. otherwise, mostl

let's go ahead and call on our hi-def doppler radar. rain is causing a dip in the northern portion of the bay area. green is light rain, yellow the moderate rainfall. orange is the heavy downpour. no purple now. that's good. purple is not a good thing at all. that signifies an inch of rain an hour. right now moderate rain at highway 1 and 101 around the northern portion of the bay area. i'm traversing to the east bay because we are seeing light rain showers around the walnut creek area and hercules but for the most part all of this is a north bay event. muir beach moderate rainfall but upstream in bolinas we have pretty heavy rain at this time. and then you couple that up with some very gusty winds. this is the big picture. this is a big storm. look at the comma right there. that's the core that still has to bang up against the northwestern section of the state of california. this plume of moisture is tapping into subtropical moisture all the way back to the hawaiian islands. so that's why we call it the pineapple express. and that's wh

it's our hi-def doppler radar. it's kind of misleading because you see some blobs on the tv screen doesn't look very impressive but all my observations are reporting, light rain in the hayward area plus some winds out of the south and southeast at 12 gusts up to about 13, 15 miles per hour. right now we currently have temperatures in the 50s. we are looking out towards sfo where it is mostly cloudy. it's a bit wet. it will be wet throughout the day today from this area of low pressure that's coming to the bay area bring an inch of rain in the wettest locations of the highest elevations of the north bay mountains. temperatures mild in the 50s and in the low 60s. again those winds blowing 10 to 20 during the afternoon hours out of the south. here's your extended forecast. it calls for the rain to taper off very early on saturday morning leaving us with a dry weather pattern all the way through christmas. >> and we start the morning off with a traffic alert along the peninsula southbound 101 all lanes completely shut

it's our hi-def doppler radar. it has been picking up some light rain around the santa cruz mountains but what is that now? look to the north and out over the open waters. that's the leading edge of an area of low pressure that promises to bring up to an inch of rain wettest locations of the mountainous areas of the north bay. we have light rain showers right now in cloverdale as well as in clearlake. offshore this cell contains moderate rainfall and against it's taken aim over towards area towards healdsburg. up to a half inch of rain in the next 24 hours. mostly cloudy skies at sfo the winds out of the east at 6. east winds at 12 in san jose where we have rain moving in by the early afternoon hours easily. and then the rain will begin to shift on over to showers in the afternoon hours with a frontal boundary area sagging to the south. today's high temperatures in the 50s and 60s a couple of degrees above normal. winds out of the south up to 20 miles per hour. extended forecast, we'll have the showers tapering off

but let's get right to our hi- def doppler radar where we're picking up the very first returns light to moderate rain showers right there off the north sonoma coast. this is what the storm looks like. it's the first look we have had of it as it approaches the bay area. and because of the potentially dangerous situation all associated with and surrounding this storm, we have a high wind warning in effect for tonight through tomorrow for just about the entire bay area. 50-mile-an-hour gusts expected at the urban level. 70-mile-an-hour gusts in the highest elevations. a flash flood watch is in effect in the bay area in addition to a high surf advisory. so those are the advisories, watches and warnings you need to know about now. more coming up later on in this newscast, michelle. >> thank you. >>> in the south bay kiet do has more. >> reporter: i'm kiet do here at what is likely going to be one of the more popular hangouts spots in the bay area and that's a sandbagging station. this is san jose's central service yard at the corner of center and ceylon. they are giving away prefilled san

check out the green and yellow on hi-def doppler. right now, heavy to moderate rain is coming down over the bay area. taking a live look now, rodeo beach in marin county, we sent our mobile weather unit to the coast to monitor the next round of rain and right now, right lane is falling as waves are crashing in. this is a popular surf spot. but no takers this afternoon as the waves are not coming in clean. this recent rain is being blamed for another north bay mud slide. crews closed tennessee valley road to clean it up. it will be closed until at least tomorrow. marin county declared a state of emergency because of storm damage estimated at a million dollars. the county can now ask the state and feds to help pay for the clean-up. kpix 5's da lin joins us live from los gatos where all this rain has caused damage but you can also see the benefits. da. >> reporter: yeah, liz. the south bay skies opened up about 40 minutes ago. you can see the light rain coming down, pretty cold, as well. and take a look at santa cruz mountains. the sant

right now hi-def doppler pick point picking up green on the screen. it's a pocket of yellow. that's a moderate downpour. it's occurring around the kentfield area and working its way in towards sausalito. right now mild temperatures out the door into the 50s and 60s. winds are pretty much nonexistent. looking toward the bay bridge mostly cloudy skies in san francisco. a lot of low-level moisture that's not being detected by radar. it's very light precipitation almost like a fine drizzle or a mist. and we will continue to see these random showers pop up anytime during the day today. and even some peeks of sunshine which means rainbow weather right here in the bay area. more rain wednesday afternoon. the cutoff low is now going east. we are on the back side of of it so we have a lot of unstable air mass and upstream right there, this area of low pressure timing wants to place it -- well, let's take a look. this is futurecast. and again, hit-and-miss showers during the afternoon right there in the san jose area by lunch hour. and towards the evening commute, mostly cloudy skies.

let's fire up our hi-def doppler radar. look at that big blob offshore. that is progressing north and wants to push into san francisco within the next 30 minutes. meanwhile, again, when you see yellow on your tv screen, that's a pretty moderate downpour at this particular time in the woodside area. also all of this is encompassing the highway 280 commute this morning. we have light rain showers pulling out of the brentwood area. and also in vacaville heading towards clarksburg and also in the tracy region. this is very interesting. the core of the center of the area of low pressure is right about there not so well defined anymore and this is the frontal boundary. remember i said it was tapping into all that subtropical moisture? the fetch all the way back to the hawaiian islands? that's why it didn't stop raining last night. it's finally stopping as this frontal boundary begins to surge, watch that there, towards los angeles. but it's actually lifting up in a northerly direction. bottom line is behind it, a lot of scattered showers for us today. and a lot
