the focus on today's hearing is on what the defense department needs to do to improve its defenses against modern and civic is -- sophisticated cyber attacks like solar winds or the micro sub exchange email server operation waged by china. these subverted tens of thousands of critical government networks to undermine trust in the infrastructure that supports our economy, our government, and our private lives. we are hoping this hearing -- we are holding this hearing because it is important for the american people to learn how the federal government is going to respond and to better protect the nation. it's serious business i know you all understand well. for more moments the next we have never -- many of our efforts have focused on making it hard for adversaries to break into our networks and have a digital equivalent higher walls -- of higher walls than most. but it is proven to be impossible to keep intruders out for there are many other ways to get inside and once inside hackers can move about unnoticed and unchallenged because everyone and every device inside the perimeter is trusted.
