of that in more, coming up. welcome to democracy now!, democracynow.org, the war and peace report. i'm amy goodman. acting secretary of defense patrick shanahan withdrew himself from consideration for the permanent head of the department. reports of domestic violence against his ex-wife circulated. reports included details on a 2011 attack by shanahan's then 17-year-old son who beat his mother with a baseball bat. she was left unconscious with a fractured skull and internal injuries that required surgery. patrick shanahan then wrote a memo arguing his son was acting in self-defense after his mother verbally harassed him. he is also believed to have delayed his son's surrender to police. shanahan apologize for the memo saying that was only intended for his son's attorneys. according to "the washington post," court records reveal a previous incident in which they allege they were assaulted by one another. lawmakers are raising questions about the vetting process toward ministration officials and whether the white house new a deliberately withheld allegations against shanahan as beingas 2017 when he was confirmed as deputy secre

house fiscal year 2020 national defense authorization act that was reported out of the armed services committee last week. it's not an exaggeration to say american democracy is under attack and we need to shore up our defenses. foreign governments, particularly russia, are actively engaged in efforts to undermine our democracy and so seize the -- and tsao seeds of discord among the electorate. they have been frighteningly successful. in the special counsel's report on russian interference in the 016 presidential election, director mueller described russia's meddling as sweeping and systemic. russia has systematically waged a misinformation campaign to weaken our confidence and participation in the democratic process. including discouraging voting, undermining confidence in our stufingse government, promoting false political narratives and wielding social division. we need, madam chair, to increase our resilience to these attacks on our democracy. i believe education must be a major part of this strategy. civics programs provide students with an understanding of american law, how government works, and government and skills to participate in democracy. a ci
