degette: thank you. all of the areas in this bill, all of the six areas in this bill have been studied, have been worked on, and have been under consideration for several decades. as my colleague, mr. schiff, pointed out. the areas in colorado were -- most of the areas in my bill were originally designated as wilderness study areas in the 1980's. and they have already been managed as wilderness for almost 40 years. and so what this would do is it would simply make permanent what everybody in colorado knows. these are the most special wild areas that we can have. my colleague from colorado says -- alleges that helicopter training would be prevented in this bill, but in fact, that's incorrect. because after working with the national guard, we withdrew the areas that were scheduled to be wilderness and called them potential wilderness so that the helicopters can continue to land there. as i pointed out in my opening statement, allowing our military to have the high level training that they need. and finally

and i remember diana degette leaning over the railing and saying, what about us? there was this sense that we did not know how we were going to get out of there. all the doors on our side had been barricaded. we did not want to go out that way because we did not know what was on the others of the doors. and we started getting instructions that were kind of conflicting, but the thrust of the instructions were to go around the perimeter of the gallery to the far side, which is again what i would call the republican side of the gallery. because there was one open door over there, which was clear -- if you picture a football field, we are on one end of the football field and we have to go all the way around the perimeter the problem was to get there, for those who know the gallery, it is a very tight space. the seats are like the most crowded movie theater you have ever been in, with handrails every several rows of seats. you had to go either under or over the handrail to make progress. plus, a lot of us were carrying purses and backpacks, and we were instructed to ta
