deidre bosa has more in today's "tech check." deidre? now x, is the worst deal in the musk universed purchased for $44 billion. and it's struggled to retain advertisers. it's the banks holding the bag. according to new data, the twitter takeover now represents the worst buyout for banks since the 2008 financial crisis. the idea of doing this deal in the first place was do a deal that deepens the bank's relationships with one of the world's richest men and turn around and sell the loans or bonds to investors who might have more risk tolerance or believe that twitter, now x, would improve under musk. instead, banks have been unable to sell that debt, and home loans, as they're called, dents profitability for banks, increasing financial risk and reduces liquidity deals. it has hurt musk's own ability to raise capital for other deals. here's the key difference, these funds get ownership or equity in exchange for financing, so they don't have to old onto that in the same way. very different way. they also don't report quarterly, so they don't

deidre bosa is here on the risks to google and investors in today's tech check.this timeline how the appeals process and so forth would affect anything that might happen here. >> that will be a key part of it, which is why we shouldn't take the idea of the breakup of something less than that. google is going to appeal this, and that could take years in the making. as we saw with microsoft in the late '90s and early 2000s, even if you don't get a breakup, it can divert resources, talent, money, capital towards fighting these anti-trust battles and making a company miss out on innovation. so that's a worry for google. but the idea of a breakup has been raised that the doj is going to ask the judge to consider. and the street has a few different ways of looking at this. unlocking value is a phrase that's become popular in recent years, as these mega caps collect more business units, especially cloud computing and advertising. the idea that if you split it up, that could unlock value. jefferies saying that the market is assigning no value to google's cloud and hardwa

deidre bosa has more on that divide for today's "tech check." dei?yes, it is a divide indeed, dom. musk's position on ai safety is complicated to say the least. on the one hand, he's been a proponent, calling for the pausing of training. on the other hand, he raised $6 billion for his own ai startup. what is certain is that musk is a major voice and player in the space, so his endorsement of the bill could be critical, especially as it moves through legislature this week. an approval would bring it to governor newsom's desk to pass or veto. the bill requires large-scale models to undergo safety testing, focusing on the companies developing those models. something that companies themselves say is needed and claim to be doing in the first place, but where many, like openai and others, which backs a lot of these companies, what they take issue with in the bill is likely the enforcement piece of it. it would require third party auditors to go in and assess safety practices and empower the state attorney general to take legal action against developers who

deidre bosa has the latest. deidre? >> hey, kelly. a little deja vu all over again. tech companies say they want regulation, but they don't want actual enforcement. social media, another good example. we still don't have overarching regulatory framework today. the california ai bill aims to ensure systems are developed safety and make sure there's a kill switch that would turn off models if they go rogue. but there's enforcement that is part of this bill, including giving the state attorney general power to sue if developers aren't compliant. it would require them to hire third party auditors to assess safety practices and give protections to whistleblowers. openai opposing the bill last night, says that national security issues, they should be regulated at the federal level and argues that a california bill could slow progress and cause companies to leave the state. now, in response, senator weiner, who is spearheading this bill, he agrees that yeah, ideally congress would handle this. but he says that they have shown a lack of actio

deidre bosa has the latest. deidre? lawsuit is really just the latest of many other authors, journalists, record labels, creators. they try to wrestle back control of their work. at issue is the way that chat bots were trained. the technology, of course, moves fast. legal frameworks move much slower. three authors say that anthropic used pirated versions to respond to human prompts. they say they're aware of the suit and assessing the complaint. but other groups sued meta and openai. this even the first copyright against anthropic. the gen ai companies, this raises the question how do you go back and gut the genie in the bottle? perplexity debuted a revenue sharing model for publishers after accusations of plagiarism, but we're starting to see market solutions for market problems. a 2-year-old startup called story just raised money at a $2 billion valuation and uses block chain to prevent gen-ai chat bots from taking information without permission. it turns ip into ip licensing. so this could be one solution. but the po

deidre bosa there to wrap it up in today's "tech check." what do we know?e of two campaigns dealing with tech over the weekend. the trump campaign hack and this is a taste of more cyber operations to come. the trump campaign says a foreign hacker gained access to internal communications and then pointing to a microsoft report that said it was a phishing attack. someone simply clicking on something in an email that they shouldn't have clicked on and how these types of attacks will factor into the election this year. phishing was used to score an influence coverage and the second, all about kamala harris' home coming of sorts and san francisco is where she came up and where she has a lot of friends and supporters. the fund raiser just a few blocks from here and it raised $13 million and it comes after trump's much smaller fund raiser here in the city, reinforcing just how important support in the tech community has become this election cycle, as well as their dollars, of course. harris' fund rauzer was much bigger than trump's and we'll show you the lineup to
