this is cobb and this is dekalb. the biggest area for jon ossoff, one of the reasons he has the lead at the moment narrowly is because he's running it up, as expect. now we have not only early vote, but some votes are coming in, 51-49 in dekalb county. the most democratic area of the district. he needs to keep the numbers in the ballpark of something like that, run up the vote total here to help him over here, where you see karen handel holding. this number has been pretty consistent all night long, a 20-point lead, 60-40 in the most conservative part of the district, the northern county of cobb county and the most populist county is the northern part of fulton county. karen handel ahead there at the moment, 53-47. if she can keep that lead, that bodes well for her. but if you come back to the full district, jon ossoff ahead at the moment, as we count the votes. and this is where now we have most of the early vote in, anderson, starting to get some of the votes cast today. this is a big turnout test for both parties.

these are the counties, dekalb, fulton, cobb counties.when the votes come in, they populate the entire county, but the district is up here in the northern part. so what do we see so far? number one, dekalb county is the most democratic county, jon ossoff has to run it up big, he is, 60% to 40%. here in cobb county, this is the most republican county. karen handel needs to run it up big in this part of the district. early votes, 55-45, a good healthy lead. so then fulton county is the largest part of the district. the northern part right up here, atlanta is in fulton county, but it's not in the district. right now, 51 for the republicans, 49 for the democrat. that is where jon ossoff can end the night. this could be the one warning sign in the early results for jon ossoff in the sense that if he ends the night losing by a point or two in fulton county, as long as he does what he has to do in dekalb county, he can still win the seat. the early voting, that might be discouraging for the democrats. they expected as republicans get the electio

he got 60% in dekalb. there have been reports that the turnout in dekalb less than expected. we'll see in that turns out. be that's something else. obviously if you get into an election like this where it's going to be decided by a point or two, you could blame anything, whichever side you turn up on. >> whatever we say about the anecdotal information we've got about election day, weeks later when we finally get the real turnout numbers, it always turns out what you can see on election day -- >> take it with a huge grain of salt. >> anecdotes are worth as far as you can throw them. >>> let me tell you that we have got the a.p. associated press calling the race in south carolina tonight. that's the race to fill the seat vacated by south carolina republican congressman mick mulvaney. the ap projected that ralph norman the republican would win that race. nbc news projecting that ralph norman, the republican candidate in south carolina's 5th district will be the winner of that race. that's cooked in terms of that having a projected winner. it will be interesting to watch the numb

in dekalb county, republican core part of the district, not much early vote there to speak of but very big same day vote overwhelmingly for karen handel. democrats did not get what they wanted out of the early vote. democrats did better than expected. in same-day, those republicans in republican heart of the district motivated p you mentioned it's been a while since a democrat won. since 1992 is when this district was created as house district. this so district where donald trump only won by a single point and that is key for democrats tonight. could they improve on what hillary clinton did in this district and what would that mean for other districts nationwide. you look where ossoff is right now and basically has improved on hillary clinton at all. this is where she landed last -- >> steve, let me interrupt you with nbc's call on this. nbc is now projecting that karen handel will be the winner in this race when all the votes are counted. steve? >> yeah, again, there is one of those districts where if you look for national implications, symbolis sem one of the biggest things. republic
