on the sequestration front, we talked to john delaney, a freshman in this body tonight experiencing his first state of the union address and republican virginia congressman rob whitman in terms of what to do to prevent sequestration. >> the members here need to remember what it takes to defend the nation and by any measure, we know it's going to be catastrophic. members need to keep that in mind. i know that back home, people are deeply concerned about this. those working in the government for the defense sector and they're going to be adversely affected by this, a 20% reduction in pay and the military families affected by the harry s. truman staying in port. we have to keep in mind the affect on the civilian dod employees and military families. >> 99% of the american people understand that they're both right and wrong. the forcing function needs to be the american people stepping forward saying we need a different path and approach to deal with our problems and this is not a short-term issue. this is a long-term issue. >> the white house said it wants to end tax loopholes and increase

i remember i did an event for congressman delaney and i called our mutual friend. he said more in five minutes about how to create jobs than i have heard anybody say in this campaign so far. people were listening. i think it is really important -- we are not and the majority and they will not do that. when i left office, one of my regrets was that i did not raise more sand about things i thought should be done because i did not want to waste any time talking about things i knew we could not pass the congress. i had this amazing argument once in the white house with chairman greenspan. about the position financial derivatives did not need to be regulated like agricultural commodities were. only rich people could buy them and they were fully capable of making those judgments. if you do not have any capital requirement and transparency requirements, no class of people is immune from error, ignorance or foolishness. at the time, the republican majority did not want to fund the sec. they were exercising their oversight function. i did not say as much in public as i did

delaney. the chair: the gentleman is recognized for two minutes. .r. delaney: thank you. mr.elaney: in my judgment, mr. simpson and mr. bowles were american heroes. they were given a job by the president of the united states, it was a difficult job and the assignment required significant vision. and their job was to work in a bipartisan way with experts and come up with a proposal that was in the best interest of the common good of the american citizens. that's exactly what they did. the fact it was rejected by our government, in my judgment, is a tragedy. if you contrast what they did to what we are considering here today with h.r. 444, it puts into context exactly the problems we have with this congress. because what mr. simpson and mr. bowles did is they came up with a specific proposal that had additional revenues and had important cuts to put the country on a better fiscal trajectory. so we are not here debating whether what proposal we should put in place to put this country on a better fiscal trajectory. that would be a worthy discussion. nor are we talking about the t
