delauro recognize for 10 minutes to. >> thank you, mr. chairman. i rise in objection to this motion. this amendment was a bad idea when it was included in our legislation last november. it remains a bad idea today. then as now the motion attempt to hold health care hostage to abortion politics. and ignores the language already in the bill prohibiting federal funds from being used to pay for abortion. and then as not it attempts at unprecedented overreach of women's basic rights. on this first point, it existed long before this particular amendment came up last november. and it currently exists in the senate version of this legislation as well. i will say it one more time. since for some reason too many of our colleagues have not gotten the message, or like congressman weiner, have willfully continued to refute falsehoods about it. other than the situations accepted by the hide language as has been the case for years now, no federal funds are used for abortion. or can be used for abortion in this health care package. i might add that this reaffirmat

our blue print for recovery that deals with job creation is a bill introduced by congresswoman rosa delauro and co-sponsored by one of the vice chairs of the populist caucus, our friend from minnesota, keith ellison, the national sfrass development bank act. what it does is it creates an opportunity to take advantage of existing infrastructure needs by identifying about 47,500 jobs and $6.2 billion of potential economic activity that are currently ready, willing and able to be acted upon but because we have not had the opportunity to marry private development with public infrastructure projects we are missing an opportunity to stimulate job growth through this national infrastructure bank. so i would ask my colleagues who support investments in infrastructure improvements, that cross the spectrum from expanding access to energy created by wind in the midwest, by building out our abblet to transfer that energy and electricity throughout the country, by building out our world broadband, by investing in roads, bridges, public improvements, how to type of an investment development bank would ma

the speaker spoke at yale with rosa delauro about the importance, significance and the impact of thislegislation on women and we're going to hear from caroline komo who will further explain that. >> thank you. caroline komo. i live in asheville, north carolina. i was diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago at age 45. i got the diagnosis call as my husband was on an important job interview for a position that would allow us to have good, high-quality benefits. thank heaven he got those benefits on that job. however, seven months later he was laid off, he works in the construction industry which was hard hit in our state, and laid off in the middle moof -- of my treatment. we had no choice but to get benefits through cobra and that was $1,058 a month for 18 months. we looked to the individual market for private insurance, we did not qualify for medicaid and had a disastrous meeting with representative from a company who quoted us, $2,000-plus a month for me only. you feel in a sense tainted. being a woman should not be a pre-existing condition. it's hard to describe the stress of g

delauro: two weeks ago i went to dinner with my family. as we left the restaurant, a young woman stopped me and she said to me, rosa, can i talk to you for a moment? i have been rating for you. why didn't you come over to the table? she said i didn't want to disturb you and your family. no disturbance. i looked at this beautiful young woman with tears in her eyes and she said to me, rosa, i have lung cancer. . i have lung cancer and i cannot get the kind of help that i need. i can't leave my job because i will not be able to get insurance, pre-existing condition is killing me, pass health care reform. you don't know, melissa maratolli. i do. and her face harms me every single day. and this is not just one store eye. -- story. it is all across this country of people who can't leave their job, who can't get the care they need because the insurance companies have run roughshod over them. yes, they are ragging -- rationing health care in this country. i know where i stand. i stand with the melissa maratollis of this nation. the republicans sta

and with that, i will yield to miss delauro. >> i thank my colleague and -- okay.this one sounds okay. i'm in opposition to the motion because once again, i think it seeks to frighten and mislead the american public. our republican colleagues choose now to attack health care quality research out of one side of their mouth while on the other side they defend the insurance companies who are the real ones who are interfering with patients and with their doctors. that is at the core of this. not comparative effectiveness research. that isn't it. imagine being told that your doctor thinks you need surgery for cancer or another condition and then your insurance company says they don't cover the procedure or you have a lifetime cap and you cannot afford that care. or you get into an awful, horrible car accident and are told your insurance company is dropping you because you failed to disclose an unrelated illness a couple of years ago. that happened to jennifer latham, a former preschoolteacher and mother of four in colorado. what our plan does is sets new common sense ru
