unfortunately that didn't happen in delaware. but it's not to happen in order for us to win in 2012. so that's the message that i hope that people can take away with them by reading this book. i tried to tell the story of how i got involved in politics. and what made me embrace the principals that i did and why i chose to become a republican. and i told it in a way that some political advisors have said was a little too honest. i probably shouldn't have admitted some things, but i did that again so that the reader can relate. because it's not about how many mistakes we've made, or if we've ever fallen. because you simply cannot pretend to be perfect. it's too exhausting and too weary to keep up that. we're human. it's about whether you get back up. whether you are willing to own up to your mistakes, correct your mistakes, and whether you are willing to forge ahead and inspite of the opposition. that's why i chose to address many of the things i did in my book and talk about where i came from and some of the hardships that i endur

what is your relationship right nownc with the delaware party and the rnc?uest what are your plans politically? >> first of all, i do want to clarify that my trouble is with a former republican in leadership.en there has been a growing discontent in delaware with the political establishmentt on both sides of the aisle that has shut out the people, the voters.y my a candidacy did not create the discontent but tapped into it and because of those dirty underhanded tricks of former leadership did, they were ousted now the new chairman understands we need to unite the former president of the nra has done a great job to build the unity to take back the stake -- state house so we can be a strong and unified force to help it take pride in the principles of which we stand but that's ousted leadership is still unhappy and still resorting to o underhanded tricks because i talkat about how one of the things the former chairman did was file a false claim against me with the sec. not only did the delaware republican leadership but also the democrats did this. i have since

this is a huge storm unlike anything we've seen since 1944 in delaware. of course, my number one concern, making sure people get out of harm's way. >> what are you hearing from folks closer to the coast on the ground? are people heeding the warnings or are folks holding back? >> a lot of people are heeding warnings. we're watching the traffic. we've got traffic cameras throughout the state. people are moving and, of course, some people are not listening yet. we encourage them to, but it's very important that people get out of harm's way. the bottom line is, many of these roads are going to be impassable. we may have to close down bridges with the wind. first responders will not be able to get where we otherwise might want them to get. best idea, get out of the way if you're in one of the evacuation areas. >> how worried are you about power outages, people who might be trapped and help might not be able to get to them for long days if not weeks? >> we expects power outages. i've had conversations with utilities and others have had conversations with them.

delaware has already declared a state of emergency. the governor has ordered the evacuation of low lying areas of the state. he's with me on the phone now. governor, let me ask you what's the primary concern right now ahead of what our meteorologist from the weather channel said is unavoidable as a hit to delaware's coastline? >> the primary concern for us right now is getting peel out of the way because we know that roads are going to be impassable, bridges may have to be closed. emergency vehicles may not be able to get where we want them to get. it's important that people get out of the way. >> we're looking at a live pyre right now at wrightsville, beach, north carolina. are you still seeing people out at the beach trying to take advantage of a higher surf than normal on the east coast? >> i've not been at the beach, so i can't say for sure. we know a lot of people are leaving. we told visitors as of 4:45 yesterday that it was time for visitors to leave. as much as we love having them in delaware now is not the time. >> are you pre

the first people of delaware and certainly the state of delaware is prepared over the last 24 hours.cuating the beach areas, the coastal areas. the governor has issued a declaration of emergency with those evacuations type ofated. first responder community into the national guard, and people are leaving the beach areas and coastal areas in droves. >> i have to ask you what are you most concerned? is it the storm surge, the flooding, or the high winds? given that hurricane irene is a very wide in scope. some 450 miles. this thing is a monster in size. >> it's a monster storm, and there's a lot of rain that's going to accompany this storm with high winds. i think the biggest concerns are the winds and flooding in the coastal areas. in particular flood-prone areas so people have been asked to evacuate those areas. people seem to be taking heed. then after that downed pourlines due to the high winds. le electric company asked people to be aware -- >> are you getting any estimates as to the potential cost of damage that can be incurred there in delaware? >> no estimates yet as to the pote

united party, but i won't -- i do talk about the cronyism of the republican party especially in delaware where the leaders have been ousted, but the reason i bring that up is not to perpetuate it or to fan the flames, but to put it to rest, and so say that, you know, if that, you know, if that cronny crowd would embrace principles that the grass roots crowd, that our party was founded on, not just our party, but our country was founded on, we will be a power house if we can unite. i dell tail things may campaign endured and what i went through as a candidate, again, to illustrate a point of what happens when we divide instead of when we unit, and everybody knows it's no secret that the 2010 elections -- the republican party was divided, but i think that there are some examples to look at, and i draw the contrast between kentucky and my own race where in kentucky we had the nrc and senator mitch mcconnell really campaigns against rand paul. you know, he was the worse thing to happen to politics until he won the primary. the day after he won the primary, the two, you know, mitch mcconnell

some need for some evacuation on the delaware river. apartment least our projections say while at a major flood stage hopefully with some limited evacuations we can manage. >> what about folks who have extensive damage, property damage and the like to their homes. what do they do now? they got to get -- can they appeal to the new jersey state and federal government for help? >> sure. you know president obama at our request signed a pre-landing declaration of emergency on the federal side to match the state of emergency that i've declared as governor. that's going to mean that want fema is going to be here with resources both in terms of helping folks through the immediate crisis and then the rebuilding phase as well. you know, we're going to be working closely with the federal government on those issues. for people locally they work with their local and county office was of emergency management. that's the first place to go to. >> i understand, sir, what you got wasn't that, i guess an unprecedented thing that you actually had this matc

what's the unemployment rate right now in delaware? >> in delaware is 8.1%.y good enough. that's why we wake up every day focused on creating more jobs and improving the economic climate here. and certainly this storm does not help with what's really important tourism industry. but, again, for the moment we've got to keep our focus on keeping people safe. >> what's the biggest economic engine in the delaware economy? what's the biggest employer? >> well, we have a few. agriculture is huge. dupont, of course, is very big, as well as some other companies like dupont. w.l. gore which makes the goretex material, everything from electronics and clothing supplies. ashland chemical company is here. astrazeneca is based here. we have a huge financial services industry, everybody from jpmorgan chase, bank of america, citigroup, barclays, ing, discover, bank of america, they're all here, and then we've got really exciting new things. we've got a gm plant that was closed. a new company that's making a plug-in hybrid there. we expect a new fuel cell company to be buildin

they first went to the hudson highlands, but 150 years later, it went to the delaware highlands. and really diverted the water that normally went to philadelphia to new york city. i don't think they anticipated that. narrator: the majority of new york city's drinking water comes from watersheds in upstate new york. a watershed is the area of land where water from rain or snow melt drains downhill into a body of water. mountains act as a funnel to feed rivers and lakes. and in this case, reservoirs. in the new york city system, water is collected and stored in 19 reservoirs, which can hold more than a year's supply -- over 580 billion gallons of water. almost all of the system is fed by gravity, without the use of energy-consuming pumps. valves open to regulate the flow into the 85-mile-long delaware aqueduct -- the longest tunnel in the world. at hillview reservoir... the water is partitioned into another giant tunnel system. where it travels deep below manhattan. the pressure built up by gravity from the mountains pushes the water upwards toward the surface through vertical shaf

not so fortunate for delaware bay. north of dover, all the way down to beth any and then of course, into ocean city, we have a high probability of exceeding four feet in storm surge coupled with the waves and beach damage, property at low levels will be damaged. further up the coast looking at the same issue on storm surge in the long island sound and new york metropolitan area. our forecast from the hurricane center, a broadforecast of the four-eight feet. [inaudible] we'll have information to pin point the problem areas on the coast and bays and rivers. it will be in the four-eight foot range. next slide please. of course, the storm we show now. it moves northward and rainfall shifts from being in the northwest corner of the torm. coming in with the weather features pulling it off to the north. we are expecting 5-10 inches of rain in the midatlantic and new york and metropolitan area. and western part of new england. all of these areas have had excessive rain in the past and ground is saturated and issues with flash

the entire state of delaware, along the virginia coastline and hurricane warnings all extended as they have been in the past along the north carolina coast. we have hurricane watches in effect for new york city, long island, coastal connecticut, rhode island, all the way back to boston we have a hurricane watch including all of cape cod. it gives you an idea of how enormous the effects will be. my first glance at this new information is they shifted it ever so slightly, maybe 20 miles to the east. that brings changes to the forecast no longer is it going over the top of new york city, now landfall is over the middle of long island. it's no longer going over new jersey, it's just off the coast of new jersey. so that would keep some of the strongest storm surge off the new jersey coastline. the track is still wobbling here and. there it's supposed to make category three early saturday. wilmington, this forecast looks better for you. >> thank you very much. across the east coast, residents are bracing for irene, especially in north carolina, that's where president obama has already declar
