and into portions of delaware too, in fact, central delaware the dover area is seeing some heavier snow in central and southern kent county. and you can see that as it reaches into portions of cape may county as well. and for philadelphia, there you can see the bands of steadier snowfall that have moved through so far this morning. and it's already starting to end in reading and tapering off in lancaster. so this is a storm that is not going to be with us all day. in fact, areas north and west are going to see it end before sunrise. in fact here we are about two-and-a-half hours before sunrise now. that's coming to an end in reading. 11 degrees, everybody has the cold. that's why it's that light fluffy variety of snowfall. 5:00 this morning, we will see 14 degrees in philadelphia. still some steady snow for much of the area at 5:00 but it tapers off for philadelphia, wilmington and trenton at 7:00. by 9:00 clouds and 18 degrees. first alert meteorologist brittney shipp has a closer look at how much you'll see in your neighborhood. good morning brittney. >>> that's right. we'll continue

this is delaware, route 1. delaware says they're doing their best to keep up with it buts it coming down real fast. police tell me they're dealing with about 11 weather related crashes, about 20 county and in southern new castle county having a few too. you can see, it is slushy. there is one lane that is really clear and then if you go beyond that, you see all the turning lanes and the u-turn lanes, they are horrible. i had a tough time, i missed the turn to surf bagel and came back around. it was tough to get back here. let me show you video we shot earlier on route 1 near milford. i was on the road. this is my passive restraint dash cam you'll look at there. you can see it was bad. one lane getting by. the snow blowing horizontally. that's never a good thing. it was bad. dell dot was out there salting but it is coming down fast and hard and it is tough to keep up with. as we come back live we'll try to go in the next few hours, we'll go down through rehoboth. they got more snow in fenwick. we'll check out al

ocean view delaware down near the delaware beach area 5 inches so far. florence township, new jersey, 4.2 inches. king of prussia, pennsylvania close to 4 inches, three and a half in reading, so far and williams, nun new jersey in gloucester county a has clocked, a total of i should say, 3 inches of snow. now we're seeing the beginning of the even. we probably will get a little more wrap around moisture before the morning is through but for a lot of folks, the major accumulations may be, starting to end but we have bright white here along the delaware river and heavier snow still falling in the delaware beaches and ocean city maryland as well. so with this thing exiting from west to east the the shore points, will see it linger longer there. but still snowing in chester county lighter then it was, and down in sussex county, delaware we have seen our highest snow fall totals. here in philadelphia a still snowing but snowing lighter then it was, low pressure system exiting, off the coast of north carolina but we're close enough that we're getting the snow

in the central and southern parts of delaware. closer to the shore, those are the locations to see the snow for the longest amounts of time. >> but even those areas north and west that are seeing lower snow totals it's very slippery this morning. look at the light snow that's falling in center city. just enough to reduce the visibility. looking across the delaware that's the view from the adventure aquarium. it's a first alert weather day, accumulating snow overnight. lit only be happening this morning. it will be done this afternoon. in fact, long gone for some areas before sunrise. and heavier snow totals south and east but it's all very slippery. even with an inch or the ground, there's slipping and sliding going on this mo. there is the snow that's falling for just about the entire region. since we have been on the air at 3:00 this morning, we are really seeing it start to taper off in areas north and west. while the steadier snow continues in delaware and south jersey you can see some bands of heavier snowfall coming through

but really the focus this morning is south jersey and delaware. >> delaware we have some information from delldot with more on that. >>> just a moment ago we had an e-mail on the road conditions in delaware and says the primary roads are passable due to salting and repeat of plowing. they have been out there in full force working all night. because the snow is still falling, the roads they have salted are packed with a thin layer of snow. that's cause inging some problems. keep that in mind. this is 495 at the northern part where it meets with 95. that's especially hard to see, but you can see a little bit of dark gray area where the roads have been plowed or salted. but then again, packed with snow. and that's where the roads will be tricky to the south. route 47 and maurice river, snow covered roads here as well. so people are out and about this morning, but you need to slow it down and take your time. we are seeing speed restrictions on most of the area highways to 45 miles per hour. and the bridges to 25 miles per hour. new jersey transit, system wide we are looking at new castle

katy zachry is live in wayne, delaware county. tell us what it is like there. >>> tracy and chris, if you follow us on twitter, many of us have nearly fallen when we walked out our front door and walked to our car. so what i'm doing right now, i'm doing it pretty carefully because you see a light layer, very light glow but it's snow. underneath that is definitely ice. so what you're dealing with is a lot of the surfaces even the road this is lancaster avenue in wayne right now, they were wet overnight. because temperatures are well below freezing you are obviously having the freezing effect. if we take it over here even this mulch, the walk from the truck to the sidewalk you can see the ice glistening. it is a complete sheet of ice. it was really difficult to actually walk across this mulch because the traction on your shoes can only help so much. so this is the takeaway this morning. it's icy out there, especially until 6:00 7:00. and when out on the roadways even if it doesn't look like black ice, chances are they are still very

matt delucia is live along the delaware river. you found the icy winter is causing a lot of problems for those working on the waterways. tell us about that. >> reporter: most ships and boats cannot get through a layer of ice. yesterday the coast guard was along the delaware river with a cutting boat to make sure commercial operations could still get through. here is what that cutting operation looks like. the coast guard was out here with a 65-foot ice-breaking tugboat that can cut ice up to 18 inches thick. sometimes a cutter is not enough. down the river and into the delaware bay is the cape may ferry that shut down earlier this week because ice got caught up in the thrusters and the dive team had to go down to clear it up. the delaware river and bay authority said they have had to can elcel a dozen trips and it's been more than a decade to make that happen. it's been more than just cold weather. i'm looking into that in the next half hour but as we look at the coast guard, the ice-breaking missions continue for as long as the i

the highest amounts, southern delaware and into cape may county. but philadelphia could see a dusting of snow out of this one. it is a long way from moving in just yet. but we already have clouds over center city as you saw that live picture from the adventure aquarium. radar is showing the wet weather just to the south. you can see snow is starting to push into extreme southeastern delaware and eastern sussex county. very light snow is starting to move into the area. that is moving up the coast and will be headed for cape may. cape may will see accumulating snow during the morning hours. but right now the temperatures are on the warm side. we are at 31 degrees in philadelphia. and wilmington. 34 in wildwood. but as the snow moves in that 34 degrees at the shore will be dropping. so moving out the door, clouds are overhead. a snow flurry or two at 6:00 in philadelphia. then light snow at 9:00 will be tapering off by lunchtime, could see a dusting. but definitely more south and east. we'll go through it hour by hour when i'm back in ten. right now j

the here's route 13 for the gang down in delaware again, south delaware, south jersey will see more snow then all of us here in philadelphia but that is a live look at delaware. lets go down the shore, this is a live look jut outside of cape may, new jersey. again, we have the snow continuing to fall. it takes about two and a half inches before the the plow trains could even make that first swipe. as we heard earlier underneath that snow that light, fluffy snow there could be some ice patches out there as we will take the the next camera and see what it brings up. this is a live look at the ramps to from the 295 just outside of the 42 freeway. so again snow covered roadways, you can barely even see blacktop here. so again plow trains are out and about but they have not hit all of the roadways as of yet. ninety-five working your way south in toward the construction zone just keep in mind there is no shoulder, in the work zone there. so any plowing that they do they are pushing the snow but it is really going to be lingering in that far left or right lane. so we will have to deal with that

if you go into southern delaware you can even up with shovellable snow. three to 5 inches is the spectation through southern most delaware. you can understand why. we're right on the cusp of this. track has been very, very important here, but there is plenty of moisture with this as well. the it is a pretty quick hitter, just beginnings of that moisture creeping in a accredits our area right now. if you are not seeing flakes just yet in delaware southern new jersey, you will with time. even in philadelphia it is a slow creep with this moisture. meanwhile we have advisories and warnings to tell but specific to sussex county, it is a winter storm warning because we have brought up your snowfall totals to three to 5 inches but in the purple shaded area, philadelphia is not included, you you can expect one to 3-inch toes fall. let's time it out. this is location depend event. in the lehigh valley northwestern suburbs outside of philadelphia, this will not the apply to you a at all. you will be okay with just cloud this morning but there will be slow travel in

accumulating snow mainly for south jersey and delaware. again, this will be falling through in the morning rush. so as you're driving in the morning, pay very close attention to what we're telling you in the morning hours before you leave. that's when the snow starts to accumulate. here's a look at the radar in the southeast right now. kicking up a lot of moisture from the gulf of mexico. there's snow and rain in this system. once it tracks the eastern seaboard it will be cold enough to only snow. there you see the rain/snow line well to the south and offshore by early tomorrow. by tomorrow 9:00 a.m. we expect a good amount of snow accumulating. there's south jersey and delaware. notice how we're on the edge of this system. not everyone will see accumulating snow. only parts of the area. either way it's not coming at a good time. coming up we'll take a closer look at the timing. who can expect the most snow and how much you can expect depending where you live. >> tomorrow morning, snow could lead to school closings and lays. go to nbc10.co

but we are watching wet weather in delaware. this is storm force 10 moving along 95 with easy travel there. treated surfaces should be fine but it's the side streets and the driveways and sidewalks that are still ice covered this morning. and in delaware we're tracking some light snow and some freezing rain this morning. it is moving through new castle county in delaware. very light snowfall in central new castle county that has reached at times into salem county in new jersey. and just to the south, that is freezing rain to start with in delaware and reaching into cape may county this morning. so still some icy conditions that are happening right now. temperatures are certainly cold enough for icy travel this morning. 28 in wilmington. dover, which is seeing some freezing drizzle this morning, is also at 28 degrees. that's where most of south jersey is as well. so a cold icy start this morning. watch out for slippery spots. we will see temperatures climb after the morning commute. by 9:00 we'll still be below freezing in philad

delaware bay.blooms of heavy snow from about i-95 down toward the shore but this is gradually pushing toward the east so things are getting better. we have some new snow totals coming in across pennsylvania. bryn mawr is up to 5.2-inches, 5-inchs in ridley park, drexel hill nearby 4-inches and then 3.8-inchs in king of prussia royersford at 3-inches and a couple of snowfall totals from new jersey and delaware. woodside delaware in kent county four and a half inches, florence in burlington county new jersey 4.2 merchantville in camden county four and pemberton three and ewing township up close to that would be mercer county up close to trenton at 4-inches of snow. we're looking at a high of 30 today. the snow is in the process of dying down. there are some trade schools but i think everybody is going to be able to get around on the area highways and by ways better by mid morning. >> let's look at an area that gets a lot of traffic this morning. this is the king of prussia area, 202 and henderson roa

and look at what is happening in delaware.hough there's steady snow up to the northeast in burlington county and trenton. we are seeing the snow come to an end in portions of delaware and south jersey. i just got the tweet from joey aenderson aendersonni, and if you look closely, that is close to five inches. there's not going to be much more snow falling for joy and many others as the snow is quickly tapering off. look at the snow falling now in burlington county where it's heavier near the trenton area. but reading and allentown seeing the snow come to and. and most of the area is going to see the snow tapering off within the next 30 minutes. by midmorning this one is completely gone. 15 degrees. the cold is going to stay with us through the, mo but this afternoon we'll get some breaks of sunshine. so it's a really cold start, which is giving us that very light fluffy snow that is easy to shovel or dust off your car. but it's also making for some very slick spots. still a few residual snow showers at 7:00. by 9:00 just cloud
